How to Strengthen the Pelvic Floor: Have you ever experienced sudden urine leakage while sneezing, coughing, laughing, or lifting heavy objects? If so, there is no need to worry or feel embarrassed. This is a very common issue, primarily caused by the weakening of the pelvic floor muscles. The good news is that you can resolve this problem through exercise alone, without the need for medication. Let us first understand what the pelvic floor is and look at seven excellent exercises to strengthen it.

What is the pelvic floor, and why does it weaken?
According to Healthline, the pelvic floor is a group of muscles and ligaments located in the lower abdomen (pelvis). It functions like a hammock, supporting vital organs—such as the bladder, bowels, and (in women) the uterus—and keeping them in place.
These muscles gradually lose their tightness due to factors such as aging, pregnancy, childbirth, abdominal surgery, weight gain, or prolonged sitting. Consequently, bladder control diminishes, and a sense of weakness develops in the lower body.
7 Easy Exercises to Strengthen the Pelvic Floor:
1. Bridge Pose – This exercise tones the pelvic floor as well as the hips (glutes) and lower back.
How to do it: Lie flat on your back and bend your knees. Keep your arms at your sides. Now, lift your hips and contract your pelvic muscles. Hold for a few seconds, then lower yourself back down. Repeat this 10 to 12 times.
2. Kegel Exercises – These are considered the most effective exercises for the pelvic floor. This involves contracting and relaxing the same muscles you use to stop the flow of urine.
How to do it: Sit or lie down comfortably. Tighten (contract) your pelvic muscles for 5 seconds and then relax them for 5 seconds. Repeat this 10 to 15 times. Do not hold your breath during the exercise.
3. Squats – Squats activate your pelvic muscles along with your leg muscles.
How to do it: Stand straight with your feet shoulder-width apart. Now, bend your knees and lower your body as if you were sitting on a chair. Keep your back straight. Then, stand back up. Start by doing this 10 times.
4. Bird-Dog Exercise – This exercise improves body balance and strengthens the core.
How to do it: Get down on your hands and knees (on all fours). Now, extend your right arm forward and your left leg backward, keeping them straight. Hold for a few seconds, then return to the starting position. Repeat the same movement on the other side.
5. Pelvic Tilts – This is a very gentle and safe exercise that strengthens the lower abdomen.
How to do it: Lie on your back with your knees bent. Tighten your abdominal muscles and press your lower back against the floor. Hold for a few seconds and then relax. Repeat this 10 to 15 times.
6. Heel Slides – If you are looking for a very gentle exercise, this is the best option for you.
How to do it: Lie on your back with your knees bent. Slowly slide one heel along the floor to straighten that leg out, then slide it back to the starting position. Keep your pelvic muscles slightly engaged. Perform this 10 times with each leg.
7. Deep Breathing and Pelvic Engagement – Deep breathing techniques help relax and strengthen the pelvic floor.
How to do it: Sit comfortably. Inhale deeply through your nose. Gently contract your pelvic floor muscles while exhaling. Release the muscles as you inhale again. Continue this for 5–10 minutes.

Remember, urinary leakage is a common physical issue; instead of feeling embarrassed, you can easily manage it through the right lifestyle and regular exercise. Dedicate just 10–15 minutes a day to these simple exercises and feel the difference yourself!
