Benefits of Kegel Exercises: In today's fast-paced life, finding time specifically for fitness isn't easy for everyone. Issues like body stiffness, pain, and fatigue have become common due to factors such as prolonged sitting, office desk jobs, poor posture, and continuous work. Pelvic health is crucial—especially for women—yet it is often overlooked.

Addressing this, fitness and lifestyle coach Luke Coutinho has shared details about a very simple exercise for women on social media: the Kegel exercise. It requires neither a lot of time nor any special equipment and can be started with just a few seconds of practice each day.
What are Kegel exercises?
Kegel exercises are a simple way to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles are located in the lower part of the body and help support the bladder, uterus, and intestines.
An easy way to understand this is to imagine you are trying to hold back urine. The muscle you contract while doing so is the pelvic floor muscle. However, one should not practice this exercise by repeatedly stopping the flow of urine while actually urinating; that action should only be used to identify and understand which muscle is involved.
Why are they beneficial for women?
Kegel exercises help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. They are particularly beneficial for women who experience issues like urine leakage when sneezing, coughing, or laughing.
Some women may experience weakened pelvic floor muscles following pregnancy and childbirth. In such cases, performing pelvic floor exercises correctly can help strengthen these muscles.
These exercises also help strengthen the muscles that support the pelvic organs. However, if a woman suffers from pelvic organ prolapse or severe urinary issues, it is advisable to consult a doctor or a pelvic floor physiotherapist rather than relying solely on exercise.
How to perform Kegel exercises?
To begin, sit or lie down comfortably. Keep your body relaxed and avoid tensing the muscles in your abdomen, hips, or thighs.
Next, gently contract your pelvic floor muscles. Initially, hold the contraction for about 3 to 5 seconds, then relax for the same amount of time.
Repeat this a few times. As your muscle control improves, you can gradually increase the duration of the hold. There is no need to hold your breath while doing this.
No need to go to the gym
The best part about Kegel exercises is that they do not require any gym equipment or a visit to a fitness center. You can perform them at home, during a break at work, while traveling, or even before going to bed. To an observer, it won't even look like you are exercising.
However, this does not mean that a few seconds of exercise will cure every pelvic issue. Proper technique and regular practice are crucial.
Do not overdo it
Balance is key with Kegel exercises. Constantly keeping the pelvic floor muscles tight or exercising excessively can actually aggravate problems for some people. If you experience pain, discomfort in the pelvic area, or worsening urinary issues while exercising, stop immediately and consult a specialist.
This information is based on fitness content shared on social media and general health guidelines. In cases of medical conditions, prolapse, postpartum issues, or urinary leakage, be sure to consult a doctor or a qualified pelvic floor physiotherapist.
