Rules for Observing the Janmashtami Fast During Menstruation: The festival of Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on the *Ashtami* (eighth day) of the dark fortnight (*Krishna Paksha*) of the month of Bhadrapada; this year, this auspicious day falls on Friday, September 4th. Dedicated to Lord Krishna, Janmashtami is celebrated with deep reverence and devotion. Women observe a fast and worship 'Laddu Gopal' (the infant form of Lord Krishna) on this day. However, many women wonder whether they can observe the fast if they are menstruating on Janmashtami. Can they perform the service and worship of Laddu Gopal? What precautions should be taken during worship? Let us find out how to observe the Janmashtami fast and perform worship during menstruation...

Can one observe the Janmashtami fast during menstruation?
From a religious perspective, the foundation of a fast lies in faith, resolve, and devotion. Menstruation is a natural physiological process. Therefore, the decision to fast or not during menstruation depends on a woman's physical strength, health, and personal faith. If she is healthy and faces no discomfort, she may observe a fast—either a *Phalahar* fast (consuming only fruits/specific foods) or a regular fast—based on her devotion. It is also perfectly acceptable not to fast if she experiences weakness, pain, or other discomfort.
How to worship Lord Krishna during menstruation?
In some traditional families, there is a custom of refraining from touching the temple area or worship materials during menstruation. However, many families and religious traditions do not uphold such a universal prohibition. Therefore, one may worship while respecting the customs of one's own household. In any case, the scriptures accord a higher status to mental worship than to physical worship. In the morning, make a resolve (*Sankalp*), close your eyes, meditate on Lord Krishna, and visualize the *Abhishek* (ritual bathing) ceremony. If you wish to worship, you can silently chant the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya," meditate on Lord Krishna, and sing *Bhajans* or *Kirtans*.
Rules for the service of Laddu Gopal during menstruation
Different households hold varying beliefs regarding the service of Laddu Gopal during menstruation. If your family tradition permits physical contact during worship, you may proceed without hesitation. If the tradition prohibits touching the idol, another family member can perform the service. You can have the *Abhishek* (ritual bathing) performed at midnight and offer *Bhog* (ritual food offering) after dressing Bal Gopal in new clothes. You may offer *Bhog*, flowers, *Tulsi* leaves, and a *Deep* (lamp) to the deity in the usual manner.
**How to prepare *Bhog* for Laddu Gopal during menstruation**
According to astrological beliefs, if menstruation occurs during the fast, you should not personally prepare items like *Makhan-Mishri* (butter and rock sugar), *Panjiri*, or *Paag* for the offering. You can seek the assistance of another family member for this purpose; you can instruct them on how the *Bhog* is to be prepared. The *Prasad* prepared by them can then be consumed by everyone observing the fast.

**An important point regarding the fast**
The most important thing is to view menstruation as a natural physiological process rather than as a state of impurity. Devotion of the heart is considered paramount in worshipping Lord Shri Krishna. On Janmashtami, it is best to decide on the worship and fasting rituals based on your faith, health, and family traditions.
