You can travel by train the next day using the same ticket; find out what the railway's rules and conditions are..

If you wish to stop for a while in a city or at a relative's place during a long-distance train journey, Indian Railways has a specific provision that can be helpful. Many passengers mistakenly believe that if they interrupt their journey and resume it later, they must purchase a new ticket. However, under the 'Break of Journey' rule, you can pause your trip and continue the remainder of your journey later using the same ticket.

You may interrupt your journey and resume it on a subsequent day using the original ticket. However, there are certain terms and conditions that you should be aware of.

What are the rules and conditions for a 'Break of Journey'?
According to Indian Railways' regulations, a passenger traveling a distance of more than 500 kilometers on a single-journey ticket is entitled to break their journey at any station along the route. This is known as the 'Break of Journey' rule.

If the total distance of the journey exceeds 500 kilometers, a passenger is permitted to break their journey at any one station en route for a maximum duration of two days. Notably, this break can only be taken after covering a distance of at least 500 kilometers from the originating station. If the ticket is for a distance exceeding 1,000 kilometers, passengers are permitted to break their journey twice along the route.

Important points to keep in mind for a 'Break of Journey'
To officially break your journey, it is mandatory to have the station master or an authorized railway official at the station where you disembark make the necessary endorsement—specifically, the station code and an official stamp—on your ticket. If you break your journey without obtaining this endorsement, you may be considered as traveling without a valid ticket, which could lead to a penalty. Please note that, under the rules, this facility does not apply to premium trains such as the Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, or Jan Shatabdi Express, as these trains feature a point-to-point fare structure and a different operational framework.

The option for a 'break journey' is not directly available for e-tickets booked online. Furthermore, if you choose to break your journey while traveling in a sleeper or AC coach, there is no guarantee that your original berth or seat will remain reserved for you; for the remainder of your journey, you will be subject to the standard rules applicable to train travel.
