Iron-deficiency anemia during pregnancy is a condition in which the body lacks sufficient healthy red blood cells. The body uses iron to produce hemoglobin—a protein found in red blood cells that transports oxygen to tissues.

Dr. Mala Srivastava (Gynecologist, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi) explains that blood volume increases during pregnancy, leading to a higher demand for iron. The body utilizes iron to produce the extra blood needed to supply oxygen to the fetus. Consequently, a lack of adequate iron stores can create life-threatening situations for the unborn baby.
**Cultivate Habits Early**
Adolescent girls are particularly susceptible to anemia due to challenges associated with menstruation and nutritional deficiencies. This condition can hinder their physical and cognitive development. Anemia can also lead to problems such as depression and serious heart disease.
A major concern is that it may impede their ability to become healthy mothers in the future. Under the 'Anemia-Mukt Bharat' (Anemia-Free India) strategy, it is recommended that girls and adolescents aged 10–19 take one iron and folic acid tablet weekly. Each tablet contains 60 mg of elemental iron and 500 micrograms of folic acid. To prevent anemia during pregnancy, it is advisable to aim for girls to maintain a hemoglobin level of 12 by the age of 12.
**Symptoms of Anemia During Pregnancy**
Extreme fatigue.
Weakness.
Dizziness.
Pale skin or yellowing of the skin and eyes.
Shortness of breath.
Rapid heartbeat.
Low blood pressure.
Difficulty concentrating, etc.
**Prevention**
Taking iron-rich vitamin supplements can help prevent and treat iron-deficiency anemia during pregnancy. Consume an iron-rich diet. Include foods such as poultry, fish, grains, dark green leafy vegetables, and dried beans and peas.
Consume foods or beverages rich in Vitamin C—such as orange juice, tomato juice, or strawberries—to enhance the absorption of plant-based iron.
If you are taking iron supplements with orange juice, avoid calcium supplements. While calcium is an essential nutrient during pregnancy, it can inhibit iron absorption.
Prepare meals at home. Cooking in an iron wok (kadhai) is also an excellent option.
