While the terms 'Ganpati' and 'Bappa' are directly associated with Lord Ganesh, the name 'Morya' is not; instead, it refers to Morya Gosavi, an ardent devotee of the deity. His story is linked to the sacred Ganesh temples located at Chinchwad and Morgaon, near Pune.

The Story of Morya Gosavi
Morya Gosavi is renowned as a supreme devotee of Lord Ganesh and lived during the 14th century. He spent much of his time in Chinchwad, where he performed his worship.

It is believed that every year during Ganesh Chaturthi, Morya Gosavi would undertake the long journey from Chinchwad to Morgaon to pay homage to Lord Ganesh. For a devotee who had dedicated his entire life to the deity, this was far more than an ordinary trip; it was an expression of faith and devotion.

As he aged, this task became increasingly difficult for him. It is said that, witnessing his plight, Lord Ganesh appeared to him in a dream.

When Lord Ganesh Visited His Devotee
According to legend, Lord Ganesh told Morya Gosavi that he would find His idol in the river. The next day, Morya Gosavi went to the river and, while bathing, discovered the idol of Lord Ganesh.

This was a deeply spiritual moment for Morya Gosavi, as he no longer needed to make the arduous journey to Morgaon; the legend holds that Ganesh had manifested before him. This event further strengthened the bond between Morya Gosavi and Lord Ganesh.

Why Do Devotees Chant 'Morya'? It is from here that this famous mantra derives its profound significance. Morya Gosavi was considered a humble devotee of Lord Ganesha, but over time, his name became synonymous with supreme devotion to the deity in Chinchwad and the surrounding regions.

According to a well-known devotional tradition, Morya Gosavi is addressed as 'Morya,' and in response, he is hailed as 'Mangalmurti'—one of the names signifying the auspicious form of Lord Ganesha. Inspired by this reverence, the famous phrase 'Mangalmurti Morya!' was coined.
