WhatsApp takes on Google Pay and PhonePe directly! Now pay electricity, gas, credit card, and FASTag bills using the chat app..

WhatsApp, a platform owned by the tech company Meta, has launched a bill payment feature in India. Through this feature, users can easily pay their everyday household bills—including electricity, gas, and water—using the messaging app. In a statement, WhatsApp announced that this feature, launched in collaboration with the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, provides users access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories, including electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit cards, and loan repayments.

This launch follows data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) showing that UPI processing reached a record high in August 2024. The volume of transactions rose to 24.51 billion—a 3.6% increase compared to July—while the total transaction value stood at ₹29.82 lakh crore. Year-on-year, the number of transactions grew by 22% and the value by 20%, with the average daily transaction count rising to 791 million. Following 23.66 billion transactions worth ₹29.88 lakh crore in July, August marked the second consecutive month where UPI transaction volumes set a record.

**Payments via Messaging App**
According to the statement, WhatsApp is rolling out the bill payment feature across the country in a phased manner. In the coming days, the feature will be available for all versions on both Android and iOS. It is worth noting that India's digital payment ecosystem has expanded rapidly over the past few years, driven primarily by the widespread adoption of UPI (Unified Payments Interface), increased smartphone penetration, and the shift of everyday transactions to online platforms.

The company stated that with bill payments on WhatsApp, users can securely pay bills for various services without leaving the app, making the process as simple as sending a message. According to the statement, users can access the bill payment feature by tapping the icon at the top of the home screen; they can view past payments and upcoming bills, manage multiple accounts under the same service provider, and make payments using their preferred payment method.

**Purchases ranging from metro tickets to insurance**
Arun Srinivas, MD and Regional Head of Meta (India), stated that for millions of Indians, WhatsApp is the easiest way to stay connected with family and friends, interact with businesses, access civic services, and make purchases ranging from metro tickets to insurance—all without ever leaving the app. Srinivas added that they are simplifying the bill payment process through this feature. There will no longer be a need to switch between different apps or keep track of multiple payment due dates. The goal is to make paying bills on WhatsApp as simple as sending a message and to help bring digital payment facilities to people living in remote areas of the country.

**Key Features**
**Household bill summary:** Bills are automatically fetched, and billers previously paid via WhatsApp Bill Payments appear on the ‘Payments Home’ screen for one-tap access.
**Multiple accounts per biller:** Users can manage bills for home, office, and family—all under the same provider—in one place.
**Popular categories on ‘Payments Home’:** Frequently used bill categories appear automatically, and there is also a "See All" option to view the full list of over 20 categories.

**How to use WhatsApp Bill Payments?**
Open WhatsApp and tap the Rupee icon located at the top of the home screen.
Select the bill category and the biller.
Enter and confirm the account details.
Check the fetched bill amount and other necessary details.

Select a payment method (UPI, debit card, or credit card) and confirm the payment. WhatsApp already facilitates various daily tasks in India, such as mobile recharges, metro ticket bookings across different cities, and access to citizen services via government chatbots. Building on bill payments, the company is extending this functionality to include routine utility payments—all within the same chat interface. This development comes at a time when UPI-linked digital transactions are surging across the country. The company stated that the bill payment feature will be rolled out gradually across India and will become available to all Android and iOS users in the coming weeks.
