Nowadays, many people face the issue of money being suddenly deducted from their bank accounts. Banks often levy arbitrary charges without providing a specific reason. In such situations, people often panic and immediately call customer care. While calling is a good first step, it is not enough to recover your money; lodging a formal complaint correctly is crucial. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has established strict regulations to protect customers from financial loss. If money has been wrongly deducted from your account, you can recover the amount by following a few simple steps.

**Immediate Action Saves Your Hard-Earned Money**
If a transaction occurs on your account that you did not authorize, inform your bank immediately. According to RBI guidelines, if you lodge a complaint within three working days of receiving an alert from the bank, you are often absolved of liability. Delaying the complaint can increase your financial risk, so do not wait for your next bank statement. In addition to calling, submit your complaint in writing—whether via the mobile app, email, or by visiting a bank branch. Where RBI regulations apply, the bank is required to provisionally credit the disputed amount to the customer's account within ten working days of receiving the complaint.
**Demand Proof for Incorrect Fee Deductions**
Sometimes, the issue is not fraud, but the bank deducting amounts exceeding its standard rate schedule. In such cases, ask the bank to explain the charges in detail, citing their specific rules. Keep all relevant documents—such as bank statements and fee schedules—safe. Also, maintain a record of your communications with the bank; a solid file of documentation significantly strengthens your case.
**The RBI Ombudsman Can Assist You**
Before approaching the RBI Ombudsman, it is mandatory to first lodge a complaint with your bank. Under the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, customers can avail of free grievance redressal services. If the bank does not respond within 30 days of your complaint, you can approach the Ombudsman. If the bank fails to provide a satisfactory resolution, you can lodge your complaint directly on the RBI’s Complaint Management System (CMS) portal. This entire process is completely free of cost. You can also seek assistance by calling the RBI helpline number, 14448.
Keep a close watch on your account.
Merely filing a complaint is not enough; you must continuously monitor your bank account. Check for any unauthorized or incorrect deductions. If the bank has issued a provisional credit (temporary refund), preserve all evidence until the matter is fully resolved. Keep transaction alerts enabled on your account for future security. Make it a habit to check your bank statement regularly, and do not hesitate to challenge any incorrect deductions made by the bank.
