The Department of Posts has dealt a significant blow to brothers and sisters ahead of Raksha Bandhan. Siblings living outside their home states will now have to spend more to send gifts and *rakhis*. Brothers typically use parcel or Speed Post services to send gifts to their sisters, while sisters use them to send *rakhis* to their brothers. However, costs will now be higher as India Post has increased the rates for both parcel and Speed Post services.

**Parcel Shipping Charges**
Parcel shipping rates depend on weight, size, distance, and the type of service. The charge for sending a 500-gram parcel has been increased by ₹30 to ₹40. Previously, the fee for a 500-gram parcel was just ₹42; now, it ranges from ₹77 to ₹84. The cost is ₹77 for intra-state delivery and ₹84 for inter-state delivery. Additionally, GST is payable over and above these charges.
**Increased Speed Post Charges**
Speed Post rates have also been hiked by the Department of Posts. Previously, the charge for a 20-gram Speed Post shipment was ₹42, but this has now been increased by ₹14. Consequently, sending a 20-gram Speed Post item will now cost ₹56, with charges increasing further based on weight and distance.
Regarding the rate hike for parcels and Speed Post, the Department of Posts stated that rates had not been revised for several years. Under the new system, parcel charges will be determined not only by weight but also by distance and region. This means that parcels of the same weight sent to different locations will incur different charges.
