Pitru Paksha began on September 26. This period holds profound significance in Hinduism and concludes on 'Sarvapitra Amavasya'. This year, the 15-day observance will end on October 10, 2026, coinciding with the Amavasya (new moon day). According to belief, this is the day one can perform *Shraddha* rituals for ancestors whose exact dates of death are unknown or were missed for some reason.

Elders say that charity performed with a sincere heart on Sarvapitra Amavasya reaches the ancestors directly. This not only brings satisfaction to their souls but also alleviates 'Pitru Dosh' (ancestral affliction) hovering over the household. If you wish to please your ancestors, make sure to donate specific items on this Amavasya. Let us find out which items can help you find relief from Pitru Dosh.
Items to donate:
Donation of food grains and black sesame seeds: Scriptures consider feeding the needy or a Brahmin—or providing uncooked rations like flour, lentils, and rice—to be an act of immense merit. Additionally, black sesame seeds are considered sacred in rituals concerning ancestors; therefore, donating them on this day is highly recommended.
Clothes and essential items: Donate new, wearable clothing—such as a dhoti-kurta or a saree—to someone in need, according to your means. You may also donate household essentials like utensils, salt, or cooking oil.
Ghee, jaggery, and fruits: Donating pure *desi* ghee, jaggery, and fresh seasonal fruits (such as guavas, apples, and bananas) is considered a highly *sattvic* (pure) and rewarding way to please one's ancestors.
Donation of silver: According to tradition, silver is considered the metal associated with ancestors. If you are financially capable, you may donate a silver object or a silver coin. This is considered highly meritorious, but it is appropriate to make this donation only if you have the means to do so.

Service to the Divine Cow and voiceless creatures: The *Shraddha* ritual is not considered complete unless you set aside a portion for voiceless creatures. Feeding green fodder to cows and offering food to dogs and crows (*Panchabali Karma*) ensures the success of your *Shraddha* observance.
