Make an upma using sorghum (jowar) that will make you forget the taste of semolina (suji); note down the recipe..

If you are bored of eating the same old semolina (rava) upma every time, it is time to try something new and healthy. Upma made from jowar (sorghum) is not only delicious but also highly beneficial for your health.

Jowar is a gluten-free grain, rich in fiber, protein, and essential minerals. It helps keep the body feeling light and energetic. So, let’s look at the recipe for jowar upma.

Ingredients
1 cup jowar rava (coarsely ground jowar/sorghum)

1 small onion (finely chopped)

1–2 green chilies (chopped)

1/2 cup vegetables (carrots, peas, beans)

1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds

1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds

8–10 curry leaves

1 tablespoon oil

Salt to taste

2 cups water

Lemon juice (optional)

Preparation Method
First, dry-roast the jowar rava in a pan until the raw smell disappears and it begins to release a pleasant aroma.

Heat oil in a pan (kadhai) and add the mustard seeds. Once they start to crackle, add the cumin seeds, curry leaves, and green chilies. Then, add the onions and sauté until they turn light pink.

Add the chopped vegetables and sauté for 2–3 minutes. Once the vegetables have softened slightly, add the water and salt.

When the water begins to boil, gradually add the roasted jowar rava while stirring continuously to prevent lumps from forming.

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let the upma cook for 5–7 minutes. Once the jowar rava has absorbed the water and the upma is cooked through, turn off the heat. Add a squeeze of lemon juice and mix gently.

What makes jowar upma special? Jowar upma is rich in fiber, which improves digestion and keeps you feeling full for longer. It is also an excellent option for those looking to lose weight. The iron and antioxidants it contains help provide energy to the body.
