Health Tips: These changes seen in the nails could be signs of an illness..

Have you ever paid attention to your fingernails? White spots, changes in shape, or discoloration are not merely trivial issues; they can sometimes be indicators of underlying health problems. This is why doctors often examine a patient's fingernails during a medical check-up. However, a diagnosis cannot be confirmed based solely on the appearance of the nails; proper medical testing and professional advice are essential.

Dr. Meher Abbas, a Senior Consultant Cardiologist and Diabetes Reversal Coach (MBBS, MD), explains that fingernails can provide significant clues about a person's overall health. Changes in the color, shape, or texture of the nails should not be ignored.

What are ‘spoon nails’?
According to Dr. Meher Abbas, white spots on the nails can arise for various reasons. They often appear due to an injury to the nail or damage to the surrounding skin. It is incorrect to automatically assume that such spots indicate a Vitamin B12 deficiency. If you notice persistent changes in your nails, you should consult a doctor. Changes in the shape of the nails can also offer insights into your health. If the nails appear sunken in the middle—resembling a spoon—this condition is medically referred to as ‘spoon nails’ (koilonychia). It can be a sign of iron-deficiency anemia.

What is ‘clubbing’?
‘Clubbing’ refers to a condition where the tips of the fingernails appear more rounded and raised than usual. This can be associated with certain lung or heart-related diseases. Vertical or horizontal lines on the nails may appear due to aging, injury, nutritional deficiencies, or specific medical conditions. Not every line is necessarily a sign of a vitamin deficiency. Furthermore, nails that break unusually easily, change color, or remain in a poor condition for an extended period may also indicate the need for a medical evaluation. Doctors advise against self-medicating or taking vitamins if you notice persistent changes in your nails. Maintain a balanced diet and, if necessary, undergo a medical examination. Paying attention to your nails is a simple way to stay mindful of your health, but consulting a specialist is essential to accurately identify any underlying medical condition.
