As the festival of Diwali approaches, markets begin to buzz with excitement. There is a palpable sense of enthusiasm among people regarding their shopping for Dhanteras—a festival associated with the aspiration for happiness, prosperity, well-being, and wealth. Many consider it auspicious to purchase gold, silver, jewelry, or new utensils on this day. It is believed that bringing new items into the home on Dhanteras invites the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi and fosters happiness and prosperity within the family.

However, given the current rise in prices, purchasing gold or silver may not be feasible for everyone. If you are planning to buy something auspicious on a modest budget, there are several traditional alternatives available. According to astrological beliefs, items such as a broom, Gomti Chakra, turmeric roots, whole coriander seeds, salt, and brass utensils are also considered auspicious to purchase on this day.
Bringing Happiness and Prosperity
Astrologer Pandit Rajkumar Sharma explains that while the tradition of buying gold and silver on Dhanteras is quite popular, there are many other items considered auspicious according to religious and astrological traditions—items that do not require significant expenditure. People can shop for the festival according to their own financial capacity. Pandit Rajkumar Sharma notes that buying a broom on Dhanteras is considered auspicious; it is recommended to purchase at least two. Similarly, acquiring five Gomti Chakras is also deemed auspicious. Gomti Chakras are associated with Goddess Lakshmi, and keeping them in the home is believed to bring happiness and prosperity.
Consider Purchasing Salt
Pandit Rajkumar Sharma suggests that one can also purchase five turmeric roots and whole coriander seeds on Dhanteras. Turmeric is linked to auspiciousness and prosperity, and whole coriander seeds can also be included in your Dhanteras shopping. Additionally, purchasing salt is considered a good option. Those who are unable to purchase gold or silver can buy brass utensils on Dhanteras. According to Pandit Rajkumar Sharma, it is considered auspicious to place five Gomti Chakras, five turmeric rhizomes, and whole coriander seeds at the place of worship during the Diwali puja of Goddess Lakshmi. Additionally, five cowrie shells and five sacred threads (janeu) can be wrapped in a yellow cloth and kept at the place of worship. Including these items in the ritual is believed to bring happiness, peace, and prosperity to the home.
