What is semolina upma?

This dish made from semolina is light, tasty, and nutritious. It can be made more healthy by using vegetables in it. It is not only filling but is also easy to digest.

Ingredients for 2-3 people
Semolina (Rava) – 1 cup
Water – 2.5 to 3 cups
Oil – 2 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Gram dal – 1 tbsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp (optional)
Curry leaves – 8-10 leaves
Green chillies – 1-2 (finely chopped)
Ginger – 1 tsp (grated)
Onion – 1 small (finely chopped)
Carrot – 1 small (finely chopped)
Peas – 2 tbsp (optional)
Coriander leaves – for garnishing
Lemon juice – to taste
Salt – to taste
Roasting the semolina is the first step
1. First roast the semolina in a dry pan on low flame for 5-6 minutes.

2. When the semolina turns light golden and starts smelling good, turn off the gas.

3. Make sure that the semolina does not burn. Keep stirring continuously while roasting.

Preparing the Tadka and Vegetables

1. Now add oil to a pan and heat it.

2. When the oil is hot, add mustard seeds. As soon as the mustard seeds start crackling, add chana dal and urad dal.

3. When the lentils start turning light brown, add curry leaves, green chilies, and ginger.

4. After this, add chopped onion and fry till it turns light pink.

5. Now add carrots, peas, or any other vegetable you want to add, and cook for 2-3 minutes.

Mixing and Cooking Semolina

1. When the vegetables become slightly soft, add 2.5 to 3 cups of water.

2. Add salt according to taste and let the water boil.

3. As soon as the water starts boiling, slowly add roasted semolina and keep stirring continuously so that lumps do not form.

4. Now reduce the heat cover it and let it cook for 2-3 minutes.

5. When the water is well absorbed in the semolina and the upma looks puffed, then turn off the gas.

6. Add some lemon juice and chopped coriander on top.

Method of serving

Serve the semolina upma hot. It can be eaten with coconut chutney, green chutney, or just like that with tea. It is also a great tiffin option for office, school, or travel as it does not spoil quickly.

Some special tips

If you want to make the upma more healthy, then you can also add finely chopped spinach or capsicum to it. Its taste increases even more when tempered with ghee.
