In Hinduism, every date and every day of the week holds special religious significance. Among these auspicious dates, the Chaturthi (fourth day) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the Magha month is considered extremely auspicious. On this day, the Sankat Chaturthi and Til Chauth fast is observed, which is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha holds the position of the first worshipped deity; therefore, the Chaturthi Tithi (fourth lunar day) that falls every month is considered special for his worship. According to the scriptures, observing this fast removes troubles, obstacles, and difficulties from life.

It is believed that worshipping Lord Ganesha with devotion and proper rituals on Sankat Chaturthi brings happiness, prosperity, and good fortune into the lives of devotees. It also provides relief from mental stress and negative energy. We learn from the renowned Acharya Anand Bhardwaj of Ujjain about when the first Sankat Chaturthi of January 2026 will be. We also learn about the proper method of worshipping Lord Ganesha on this day to receive his special blessings.
According to the Vedic calendar, the Magha Krishna Chaturthi Tithi in the new year will begin at 8:01 AM on January 6th. This Tithi will remain valid until 6:52 AM on January 7th. Therefore, the Sakat Chauth fast will be observed on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
Donation of Sesame Seeds and Jaggery
Sakat Chauth is also known as Tilkuta Chauth in many places. On this auspicious day, donating sesame seeds is considered extremely fruitful; therefore, one should definitely donate sesame seeds and jaggery on Sakat Chauth. According to religious beliefs, doing so reduces the effect of Shani Dosha (negative influence of Saturn) and removes obstacles in life. It also increases respect and prestige in society.
Donation of Warm Clothes
During Sakat Chauth, which falls in the Krishna Paksha of the Magha month, the cold is at its peak. According to the scriptures, donating blankets, woolen clothes, or shoes to a needy person or a deserving Brahmin on this day pacifies Pitru Dosha (ancestral curse). It also provides relief from problems and difficulties related to children. The Importance of Donating Food
Feeding a hungry person is considered the greatest act of charity. Donating grains on the occasion of Sakat Chauth ensures that there is never a shortage of food and wealth in the home. Religious belief holds that this removes financial difficulties and maintains prosperity in the family.

Donating a Copper Vessel and Dakshina (Offering)
After the completion of the Sakat Chauth puja, offering a copper vessel and a donation (Dakshina) to a Brahmin, according to one's means, is considered a symbol of the completion of the fast. The scriptures state that no puja is complete without Dakshina; therefore, one must offer Dakshina with devotion at the end.
