A recent study has revealed that overly strict parenting, known as "Tiger Parenting," can negatively impact children's mental health. In this type of parenting, children are expected to follow orders without question, are punished for mistakes, and their feelings are not given due consideration.

New research from Nepal's Tribhuvan University suggests that children raised in such an environment are at significantly increased risk of depression, anxiety, and stress. Indeed, such strict parenting significantly impacts children's mental health.
What does the study say?
Tiger parenting refers to extremely strict discipline, high expectations, and a "do as you are told" attitude. Such parents typically pressure their children for a good future, but this pressure gradually takes a toll on them. According to the study, this type of parenting can leave children emotionally vulnerable because they are given little opportunity to express themselves or learn from their mistakes.
This study interviewed 583 schoolchildren aged 10 to 18. They were asked questions about their parents' behavior and their own mental state. According to Dr. Anjali Bhatt, lead author of the study, children who described their parents as "authoritarian," or very strict, showed more symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Meanwhile, children whose parents were cooperative, communicated with them, and set sensible rules had fewer mental problems.
Children Feel Isolated
The study also revealed that children of strict parents may have slightly higher self-esteem, but this benefit is outweighed by the negative impact on their mental health. Living under constant pressure and fear can make children feel isolated and helpless, which can worsen their emotional health.
Bullying at school can also harm mental health.
The research revealed another important finding. Bullying at school has a profound impact on children's mental health. Children who reported being bullied were two to two and a half times more likely to experience depression and anxiety. This clearly demonstrates that children's social environment, especially their school experience, also influences their mental state.
Impact on DNA
Furthermore, some research suggests that the effects of strict parenting can be visible at the DNA level. A British study found that overly strict parenting can lead to changes in children's genes that reduce their ability to cope with stress. This pattern has also been observed in adults suffering from depression.

Understanding Along with Rules
Experts say that rules are important for children, but communication and understanding are equally important. When parents explain the reasons behind rules, listen to them, and adopt a cooperative attitude, children's self-confidence and mental health improve. A balance between strictness and love is the key to happy and healthy parenting of children.
