Have you ever wondered what would happen if a child started eating his hair? It sounds strange, but it is a rare but very serious medical condition - Rapunzel syndrome. It is not just a strange habit, but a disease that deeply affects mental and physical health, which can be seen in children as well as some adults.

Why does this problem arise?
Experts say that the roots of this condition often lie in mental pressure, anxiety, anger, or emotional shock in childhood. Sometimes it can also be a part of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Some children pull their hair and put it in their mouths to calm themselves under stress or anger. Lack of attention, feeling of loneliness, or emotional neglect can also give rise to this. Over time, this habit becomes so deep that the child is unable to give it up even if he wants to.
How big are its dangers?
The consequences of Rapunzel syndrome are not only psychological, but also physically dangerous. Continuous swallowing of hair can cause stomach pain and frequent vomiting. Intestinal blockage can occur. Lack of nutrition, rapid weight loss, and weakness can occur. In severe cases, life-threatening conditions like intestinal rupture can also occur. If the size of the hairball in the stomach becomes very large, it may have to be removed through surgery.
What are the symptoms to identify?
If your child—
- Pulls hair from the head repeatedly
- Chews or swallows hair
- Complaints of stomach pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite
- Suddenly losing weight without any reason
- Constantly feels heaviness or swelling in the stomach
- Is struggling with constipation or digestive problems
- Has started keeping distance from school or friends
- Is always worried, depressed, or irritable
- Is showing signs of patchy hair loss (bump-like parts)
- Or is feeling a problem like a blockage in the throat and stomach
How to treat and prevent?
The treatment of this syndrome is to remove not only the physical problem but also the mental causes. With timely identification and proper care, the child can be completely cured.
Psychological therapy, Such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps children get out of this habit, as well as teaches them ways to manage stress and anxiety.

Counselling: It is important to understand the child's feelings, identify their insecurities, and teach them to express them in a healthy way.
Family support: An environment of love, attention and security stabilizes the child's mental state. Parents should be patient and not put pressure on the child.
Nutrition and health care: A balanced diet, adequate water and regular health checkups strengthen both the physical and mental health of the child.
Raising awareness: Explain to the child that eating hair is harmful to the body and can have dangerous consequences.
