Low-income earners often dream of becoming wealthy but are unsure of the path to achieve it. However, by investing systematically according to a plan, they can accumulate a retirement corpus of ₹5 crore. Here, we use calculations to show the monthly SIP amount required to build a ₹5 crore retirement fund starting at age 30.

An individual starting at age 30 has a 30-year window until retirement at age 60. Someone starting at age 25 has about 35 years, while a 35-year-old has 25 years, and an investor starting at age 40 has only 20 years. Additionally, factors such as current income, future salary increments, monthly expenses, children's education, EMIs, healthcare costs, and post-retirement needs determine the actual size of the retirement fund required.
**SIP Amount Required**
Assume an average annual return of 12% and a fixed monthly investment amount maintained throughout the tenure without increasing the SIP. If you are 30 years old, you might need a monthly SIP of approximately ₹14,500 to build a corpus of ₹5 crore by age 60. Investing this amount consistently for 30 years results in a total investment of around ₹52.20 lakh. With the estimated return, the retirement corpus could reach approximately ₹5.12 crore.
In contrast, an individual starting at age 25 would need a monthly SIP of around ₹8,000. Investing for 35 years would result in a total contribution of approximately ₹33.60 lakh. Based on an estimated annual return of 12%, the corpus could reach around ₹5.20 crore.
**How much to invest at age 35?**
If the investment begins at age 35, the investment tenure is reduced to 25 years. In this scenario, to build a retirement fund of around ₹5 crore, one might need to invest approximately ₹26,500 per month via an SIP. The total investment over this period would be around ₹79.50 lakh, and the estimated corpus could reach approximately ₹5.03 crore. Similarly, someone starting at the age of 40 might need to invest about ₹50,000 per month via an SIP to achieve this goal in just 20 years. In this case, the total investment would be around ₹1.20 crore, and the estimated corpus could reach close to ₹5 crore.
**Start Early, Accumulate More**
These figures clearly show that the biggest advantage in retirement planning comes from starting investments early. The sooner an SIP begins, the more time the investment has to benefit from compounding, potentially reducing the monthly investment burden required to meet the goal. However, inflation should not be overlooked when setting a target of ₹5 crore. Monthly expenses that are ₹50,000 today could rise significantly in 25 or 30 years due to inflation. Therefore, post-retirement needs should always be estimated with future inflation in mind.
**Keep These Points in Mind**
Additionally, it is important to understand that an annual return of 12% is merely an estimate and comes with no guarantees. Investments in equity and equity-based mutual funds are subject to market fluctuations, and actual returns may vary—being either lower or higher than projected.
Given this, market experts suggest that instead of relying on a single investment option, it is often better to diversify investments across different asset classes based on one's risk appetite and financial goals. A balanced mix of market-linked instruments—such as mutual funds, stocks, and ETFs—alongside relatively safer options like PPF and fixed deposits can help build a more robust retirement portfolio over the long term.
