Railways Update: Who is eligible for free travel on trains? Check the list here..

Lifelong FREE Train Travel: In honor of the soldiers who serve the nation, the Government of India has taken a significant decision. Now, soldiers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force who have received gallantry awards—along with their families—will be granted the facility of free travel on Indian Railways. This initiative has been undertaken to express respect and gratitude toward those brave soldiers who have made pivotal contributions to the country's security. According to the government's directive, all recipients of the Army/Navy/Air Force Medal (Gallantry Award) will be entitled to free train travel for the rest of their lives. This facility will be available in categories such as First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC Chair Car. Furthermore, they will be permitted to take one companion along with them during their journey.

Families Can Also Travel for Free
This decision also takes the welfare of the soldiers' families into account. If a soldier has been awarded this medal, their spouse—that is, their husband or wife—will also be entitled to this benefit. In the unfortunate event of a soldier's demise, their widow or widower will continue to receive this facility until they remarry. Additionally, for soldiers who were conferred this honor posthumously (after death) and were unmarried at the time, this facility will be extended to their parents. The parents, too, may avail of free train travel for life, accompanied by a companion. The Government of India has issued clear directives to the Railways in this regard. This facility is set to be fully implemented in the near future.

Who Else Receives Concessions on Trains?
Special Concessions for Passengers with Disabilities

Passengers with disabilities receive the highest level of concessions from the Railways. Visually impaired, hearing-and-speech impaired, mentally challenged, or physically disabled passengers are granted substantial fare concessions across various classes of trains. In many instances, the attendant traveling with them is also extended the same concessionary benefits.

Relief for Patients Suffering from Serious Ailments
The Railways also extends its care to those individuals who are battling serious illnesses. Patients traveling for the treatment of ailments such as cancer, thalassemia, kidney dialysis, heart disease, and anemia are granted significant concessions on their tickets. In many instances, the attendant accompanying the patient also receives the same concession, thereby making travel for medical treatment more manageable.

Special Facilities for Students
Students, too, receive considerable relief from the railways. They are eligible for fare concessions when traveling to and from school or college, for educational tours, for study-related excursions, and for appearing in competitive examinations.

Benefits for Examinees and Researchers
Apart from the above, candidates appearing for national-level examinations—such as the Main Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) or other central selection commissions—are granted fare concessions. Furthermore, research scholars are also extended limited concessions for travel undertaken in connection with their research work.
