Health Matters: Troubled by high uric acid and joint pain? Here’s how to control it..

Have you been experiencing severe joint pain for the past few days? In particular, is there unbearable pain in your big toe that makes walking or even standing up difficult? This could be a sign of gout.

Sudden, intense pain, swelling, and excruciating discomfort—especially in the big toe—can indicate elevated uric acid levels, which aggravate gout. Uric acid is produced in the body through the breakdown of substances called purines. Normally, the kidneys filter it out and excrete it through urine; however, if the body fails to eliminate sufficient amounts or if levels rise, joint-related problems begin to develop.

Health experts state that high uric acid levels do not necessarily mean a person will develop gout. It can be managed through proper diet, weight control, and timely treatment.

What causes high uric acid levels?

Dietary habits are often cited as a primary cause of elevated uric acid. Additionally, factors such as genetics, reduced kidney function, certain medications, and other underlying health issues can contribute to the problem.

Red meat and certain types of seafood are high in purines.
Alcohol or beer consumption can increase the risk of gout.
Excessive intake of sugary drinks and fructose can also raise the risk.
The risk is also higher in individuals suffering from obesity or kidney-related problems.

What dietary changes should be made?

If you have high uric acid levels, there is no need to completely stop consuming all forms of protein or lentils. Maintain a balanced diet and avoid foods that are high in purines.

Minimize the consumption of red meat and high-purine seafood.
Limit alcohol and sugary soft drinks. Include vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat milk and yogurt in your diet.
Opt for whole fruits instead of juices and sugary drinks.

What else should be kept in mind to control uric acid levels?

Drinking adequate water is essential for controlling uric acid. It helps maintain the body's fluid balance and facilitates the elimination of waste products through urine.

Drink water at regular intervals throughout the day.
If you are overweight, take steps to lose weight gradually.
Engage in regular light to moderate physical activity.
