Why is Vermilion Offered to Lord Hanuman? In Hinduism, offering *sindoor* (vermilion) to Lord Hanuman is regarded as the ultimate symbol of his unwavering devotion and selfless love. Behind this practice lies a deeply moving and inspiring tale from the era of the *Ramayana*—a story that imparts a profound lesson regarding the true application of mindfulness and the very essence of genuine faith. Thus, let us explore why *sindoor* is offered to Lord Hanuman...

A Mythological Tale of Lord Hanuman and Mother Sita's Vermilion
According to mythological lore, after Lord Rama had triumphed over Lanka, he returned to Ayodhya. One day, Lord Hanuman observed Mother Sita applying red vermilion to the parting of her hair. Curiosity stirred within Hanuman, and with great intrigue, he asked, "O Mother! Why are you applying this red substance to your forehead? What is its significance?" Smiling at Hanuman's innocence, Mother Sita replied with great affection, "My son, Hanuman! This is *sindoor* (vermilion). Applying it extends the lifespan of my Lord—your cherished deity, Lord Rama—and ensures his perpetual happiness. It serves as a symbol of my love for him and a harbinger of his good fortune."
Hanuman, who was the supreme devotee of Lord Rama, mused to himself: "If merely a pinch of *sindoor* applied by Mother Sita can extend my Lord's life, then surely, if I were to apply *sindoor* over my entire body, my Lord would become immortal, and his happiness would know no bounds!"
Disregarding all logic or hesitation, Hanuman immediately smeared his entire body with a thick coating of vermilion. In this very state, he arrived at Lord Rama's royal court. When Lord Rama beheld Hanuman—painted red with vermilion from head to toe—he could not suppress his laughter.
Lord Rama asked, "Hanuman, what on earth have you done to yourself?" With a look of utter innocence, Lord Hanuman said, “Lord, Mother told me that *sindoor* (vermilion) is meant to ensure your longevity and happiness. Therefore, I thought that rather than applying just a little bit of *sindoor*, it would be far better if I covered my entire body in it, so that you may remain safe and happy forever.”

Why Do People Offer Sindoor to Lord Hanuman?
Witnessing this guileless and profound devotion of Lord Hanuman, Lord Rama became deeply moved. He embraced Lord Hanuman and bestowed upon him a boon: “From this day forth, any devotee who offers *sindoor* to you shall receive my special grace, and all their sorrows and afflictions shall be dispelled.” It was from that moment that the tradition of offering *sindoor* to Lord Hanuman began.
