Post Office TD Scheme: If you wish to invest your money where you earn a fixed interest rate—similar to a bank fixed deposit—but prefer the Post Office over a bank, then the Post Office Time Deposit (TD) could be a suitable option for you. You can deposit funds for a tenure ranging from 1 year to 5 years, depending on your requirements.
Interest rates based on tenure:
Post Office TDs offer different interest rates for different tenures.
1-year TD: 6.9% annual interest
2-year TD: 7.0% annual interest
3-year TD: 7.1% annual interest
5-year TD: 7.5% annual interest
In other words, the highest interest rate is offered on the 5-year TD.
Difference between Bank FD and Post Office TD:
Under this scheme, interest is calculated quarterly but paid out on an annual basis. Interest rates on bank FDs can change over time; banks typically adjust their rates based on RBI policies and market conditions. However, the interest rate fixed at the time of opening the FD generally remains applicable for the entire tenure of that deposit.
Similarly, with Post Office TDs, returns are based on the interest rate fixed at the time of investment. Therefore, it is advisable to check the prevailing interest rate before investing.
Tax benefits on 5-year TD:
You can start investing in a Post Office TD with as little as ₹1,000. Subsequently, you can deposit any amount in multiples of ₹100. There is no maximum limit on the investment amount for this scheme.
If you opt for the 5-year TD, you may avail of tax exemption benefits under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act. However, it is important to understand the applicable tax rules and limits before investing.
Option to extend tenure after maturity:
You also have the option to extend the tenure of the Post Office TD after it matures.
A 1-year TD can be extended by 6 months. A 2-year TD can be extended by up to 12 months.
3-year and 5-year TDs can be extended by up to 18 months.
Facilities for both single and joint accounts are available; this means you can open an account either individually or jointly with another person, depending on your needs.
Investment Tenure Interest Rate (Annual) Total Interest on ₹5 Lakh Investment Total Maturity Amount
1 Year 6.90% ₹33,301 ₹5,33,301
2 Years 7.00% – –
3 Years 7.10% ₹1,17,538 ₹6,17,538
5 Years 7.50% ₹2,24,974 ₹7,24,974
What will you get on a deposit of ₹5 lakh?
If you deposit ₹5 lakh in a 1-year TD, you could earn approximately ₹33,301 in interest, based on the given calculations. Similarly, depositing ₹5 lakh for 3 years could see the amount grow to around ₹6,17,538, meaning an interest earning of approximately ₹1,17,538.
If the ₹5 lakh is kept deposited for the full 5-year term, the amount could grow to approximately ₹7,24,974, yielding around ₹2,24,974 in interest.
Why is the Post Office TD a good option for you?
The Post Office Time Deposit is a suitable option for those seeking guaranteed returns on their money without taking significant risks. The tax benefits associated with the 5-year TD, in particular, make it an attractive choice. However, before investing, be sure to check the current interest rates, tax regulations, and scheme terms to ensure they align with your requirements.
