As the use of artificial intelligence grows rapidly, so too does the emergence of cyber threats. Keeping this in mind, OpenAI has added two new security features to its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT. Their purpose is clear: to protect users' personal information and provide early warning of potential threats.

The two features introduced by the company include lockdown mode and elevated risk labels. This step is considered crucial for a country like India, given the increasing use of digital payments, Aadhaar-linked services, online banking, and AI tools. This is especially true when cases of data theft and online fraud are constantly increasing.
Recently, a new cyber threat called "prompt injection" has emerged. In this method, a hacker inserts hidden instructions within a document or text. When a user reads or analyzes that content with an AI tool, the AI can inadvertently reveal sensitive information. For example, if text from a suspicious website is submitted to ChatGPT for verification, a hidden command within it could trigger the AI to extract data from the system.
The Elevated Risk Label feature is designed to protect against such risks. Whenever ChatGPT attempts to connect to an external website, third-party app, or web-connected tool, a clear warning will appear on the screen indicating a potential threat. This allows the user to decide whether to continue.
Lockdown Mode, on the other hand, is a safety shield. When enabled, ChatGPT limits access to external systems, third-party apps, and web connections. This significantly reduces the risk of data leakage. This feature is considered especially useful for journalists, corporate professionals, government officials, and those involved with sensitive information.
Amid the growing threats in the digital world, it's clear that AI platforms are prioritizing security.
