The star who captivated audiences for years and entertained them is now at a point in his life where he's helpless and helpless. We're talking about Rajpal Yadav, the renowned actor who has captivated audiences for years with his comedy.

The 9 crore rupee scam became such a drag on this small-time star's life that it felt like his life had been dragged from the cinema screen to the threshold of bars. Unfortunately, the very cinema where he earned fame for years has turned its back on him, and people are asking why they haven't supported Rajpal Yadav in this difficult time.
Today, we'll tell you the inside story of Rajpal Yadav's case and explain how the 9 crore rupee scam became a life-threatening ordeal for him.
Rajpal took a loan of 5 crore rupees to make a film.
To understand the origins of Rajpal Yadav's imprisonment, you have to go back almost 16 years. In 2010, Rajpal Yadav decided to become a director. Rajpal Yadav released his first film as a director, "Aata Pata Lapata," in 2012.
For this film, he took a loan of 5 crore rupees from a Delhi-based company, "Murli Projects." Rajpal had already made several films at that time and was a well-known figure. He thought he might try his hand at filmmaking and made "Aata Pata Lapata." After a long wait, the film was released in 2012, but unfortunately, it flopped.
Which film was that?
Rajpal himself took on the responsibility of directing "Aata Pata Lapata." In addition to producing the film, he also acted as the lead actor. The film featured Rajpal Yadav, Asrani, Om Puri, Sharat Saxena, Vijay Raaz, Manoj Joshi, and Ashutosh Rana.
Rajpal produced the film in the name of his wife, Radha Yadav. According to Box Office India reports, the film, made at a cost of approximately 11 crore rupees, grossed only 3.4 million rupees in India. Worldwide, it grossed only 4.2 million rupees. This film was a disaster for Rajpal, and it flopped at the box office.
Rajpal Failed to Repay Debt and Was Jailed
When the film flopped at the box office, Rajpal was unable to repay the loan he had taken. The checks he issued bounced at the bank. This led to a legal battle. When the legal battle began, Rajpal Yadav was sentenced to 10 days in jail in 2013, and he spent four days in jail.
A Delhi court convicted him and his wife on seven counts of check bouncing and sentenced them to six months in prison. In April 2018, a magistrate court convicted him and his wife, Radha, under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
After seven checks issued to the complainant bounced, the actor was sentenced to six months in prison, spending approximately three months in civil prison. However, this sentence was upheld by a sessions court in early 2019.
Rajpal's troubles did not end.
Rajpal Yadav asked the court for more time, promising to repay the amount in the coming days. Rajpal Yadav filed a revision petition in the Delhi High Court, but this relief was short-lived. The court suspended Rajpal's sentence on the condition that he pay the outstanding amount as per the agreement.
The court did not consider him a 'habitual offender' and gave him a chance to reform. In June 2024, the High Court temporarily suspended his sentence and asked him to repay the outstanding debt of approximately ₹9 crore. Although Rajpal repeatedly gave assurances, he unfortunately failed to repay the outstanding amount.
That final respite, and then Rajpal went to jail.
Finally, in 2025, Rajpal Yadav deposited ₹7.5 million with the court by October. However, the court noted that ₹9 crore, including interest and penalties, remained outstanding. Rajpal had stated that he was paying the outstanding amount, but there was another delay.
Following this, the court found a lack of seriousness in the entire matter, leading Justice Swaran Kanta Sharma to strongly remark that leniency cannot always be shown to anyone, regardless of their celebrity status. Subsequently, on February 4, 2026, the court rejected a last-minute plea seeking a week's extension to raise funds, bringing the darkness of prison closer to Rajpal's life.
The court stated that Rajpal had failed to comply with 20 different previous orders. On February 4, 2026, he was ordered to surrender, and on February 5, he arrived at Tihar Jail, where he has remained in prison ever since.

What did a dejected Rajpal say before going to jail?
Rajpal Yadav was jailed, but a video is currently going viral. What Rajpal said in it will surely move you.
Before going to jail, Rajpal became emotional and said, "Sir, what should I do? I have no money... Everyone here is alone. I have no friends." This statement reflects the reality of the city of dreams, where even light is lost.
