The winter season has arrived. If you are suffering from a cold, flu, or cough due to the fluctuations in temperature during this season, you can manage it using simple home remedies. Dr. Mohammad Imran, a practitioner of Unani and Ayurvedic medicine, explains that coughs often worsen during winter due to these temperature shifts. If a cough persists for more than three weeks, it could be a sign of a viral or bacterial infection.

Viral infections can range from the common cold and influenza to more serious conditions like pneumonia. Neglecting such symptoms could potentially lead to asthma, which can be quite dangerous. Therefore, it is advisable to begin treatment as soon as a cough starts; otherwise, a minor oversight could escalate into asthma or chronic respiratory issues, significantly impacting your quality of life.
**Two Types of Coughs**
Dr. Mohammad Imran notes that there are two main types of coughs: dry and wet. These can be triggered by various factors, such as excessive physical exertion or the consumption of "cold" (cooling) foods. A dry cough can also be caused by eating dry, non-moist foods or by holding in urine for too long. Conversely, a wet (productive) cough may develop if one consumes excessive amounts of dairy products—like milk or yogurt—or remains overly sedentary. If a cough persists for more than eight weeks, it could indicate a more serious underlying medical condition. It is essential to take extra care during seasonal transitions. If you are significantly troubled by a cough, you can try effective home remedies.
**Home Remedies to Relieve a Cough**
Honey is considered an excellent, highly effective remedy for a cough, as it possesses anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce swelling in the throat. To use it, you can mix one spoonful of honey into a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. Alternatively, you can consume ginger juice mixed with a little black salt. This can help alleviate a sore throat and put an end to a cough. You can also use a mixture of ginger juice and honey to treat a cough. Alternatively, you may gargle with salt water; this process helps dislodge bacteria adhering to the throat or lungs, which can help eliminate a cough.

If you are troubled by a persistent cough, drinking milk mixed with a little turmeric daily can be very beneficial. You can also prepare a decoction (kadha) at home using black pepper and holy basil (tulsi) leaves, which can be quite effective in relieving a cough. However, if your cough is severe, it is advisable to consult a qualified physician before trying any home remedies. This ensures that your condition does not worsen, allowing you to safely and effectively manage your cough using home-based remedies.
