Doctors often recommend applying a compress to help injuries heal faster or to reduce swelling, but it is not always clear whether a cold or a warm compress is the better choice. If you find yourself confused about this, let’s explore the differences between the two.

When should you use a cold compress (ice therapy)?
The type of therapy required depends on whether your pain is recent or chronic. A cold compress is most effective within 24–48 hours of an injury; the cold causes damaged blood vessels to constrict and temporarily numbs the affected area. This helps reduce swelling, pain, and redness.
A cold compress can be effective in the following situations:
Sudden injuries
Headaches and migraines
Fever
To stop bleeding
Arthritis pain
The correct method:
You can use an ice pack or a towel soaked in cold water.
Apply it to the injured or painful area for at least 5–10 minutes, and repeat the process every one to two hours.
Be careful: if the area becomes excessively cold or goes numb, remove the pack immediately.
When should you use a warm compress (heat therapy)?
Heat therapy should generally be used for injuries that are more than 72 hours old. If you have chronic back pain, stiffness, or persistent discomfort, a warm compress can help relax the muscles. It increases blood flow to the muscles, which helps alleviate pain, tension, and stiffness. Applying heat can be beneficial in the following situations:
Muscle spasms and knots
Joint-related issues (depending on the specific condition in cases of arthritis)
Stress-induced headaches
Abdominal pain and cramps during menstruation

Proper Method
The most important point to remember when using heat therapy is that the heat pack or the water in the bottle should not be excessively hot.
Heating it to a moderate temperature is sufficient for the therapy.
After applying it to the affected area for 3–4 minutes, check the skin for any red marks. Additionally, if you experience a burning sensation, stop the therapy immediately.
Heat therapy can be repeated twice a day.
