A passport is one of the most important documents for traveling outside the country, but a fixed procedure has to be followed to get a passport. Police verification is also an important step in this, through which the police check the information related to your background. This also includes the address of the applicant, which is verified by the police.

Types of police verification

Police verification for passport can be done in three ways:

Pre Police Verification: Often the police verify the address of someone before issuing a passport. Under this, a police officer visits the mentioned address to confirm the details filled by the applicant.

Post-Police Verification: In some cases, the initial passport can be issued even without police verification. This is applicable when documents like an Aadhaar card, voter ID, and PAN card are submitted for online verification. However, police verification can be done later under this step as well.

No police verification required: Government officials applying for passports who have submitted their identity proof through Annexure B are exempted from police verification. A complete list of this can be seen on the official website of the passport office passportindia.gov.in.

How is police verification done for passports?

Application

First of all, the applicant has to submit an online application for passport at the passport service website or Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or passport office. During this, along with the application form, relevant documents like identity, address and date of birth are submitted. On submission of the application, a time is fixed to visit the PSK or passport office for document verification and biometric data collection.

Police verification

After the initial process is completed, the application is forwarded to the respective police jurisdiction based on the applicant's address. Here, the local police officers conduct a background check to verify the details provided in the application.

Home visit by police

Next, a police officer visits the applicant's residence to verify the information provided. During this, the officer may also take information related to the applicant's background, occupation, and the purpose of obtaining the passport.

Verification report

The police officer then submits a verification report to the passport office. This report contains important information about the applicant's background and the findings of the verification process.

Issuance of passport

Based on the verification report, the passport office evaluates the information provided and decides whether to approve the application or not. If any mistake is found, further investigation may be initiated. If the verification process is successful, then the applicant's passport is issued and sent to the applicant's address.
