A ration card is a means through which those in need can obtain rations—either for free or at a subsidized (low) cost. Without a ration card, you cannot avail of free rations. Furthermore, there are several other essential government schemes that cannot be accessed without one. Therefore, if you wish to benefit from these government schemes, having a ration card is crucial.

Which schemes are included?
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PM Ujjwala Yojana)
Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, free gas connections are provided to those in need. To avail of this scheme, you must possess certain mandatory documents and meet the eligibility criteria.

Required Documents:
Aadhaar card
Aadhaar card can also serve as proof of address.
Bank account details (to receive subsidy payments).
A recent photocopy of your ration card. Ensure that the names of all your family members are included in the ration card.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY)
A ration card is mandatory for this scheme; without it, you cannot obtain an Ayushman card. Through the Ayushman card, those in need are provided with free medical treatment worth up to ₹5 lakh. If you do not have a ration card, you cannot apply for an Ayushman card.

Required Documents:
Aadhaar card or PAN card (for identity proof)
Proof of address
Contact details (mobile number and email)
Caste certificate
Income certificate
Proof of current family composition (a ration card can be used for this purpose).
If you do not have a ration card, you should get one made, as it may be required for various other government schemes as well.

How to get a ration card made?
First, you need to visit the official website of the Food and Civil Supplies Department of your respective state. Now, select the option to apply for a new ration card.

Next, you will need to register by entering your mobile number.
Fill in the details of your family members in the application form.
Scan and upload the required documents.
Submit the form and save the acknowledgement/reference number.
This reference number will help you check your application status later.
