Raksha Bandhan 2026

Raksha Bandhan, a symbol of the love, affection, and trust shared between siblings, is one of the major festivals in Hinduism. On this day, sisters tie a *Rakhi* around their brothers' wrists and pray for their happiness, prosperity, good health, and longevity. Brothers, in turn, pledge to protect their sisters and stand by them in every situation. On Raksha Bandhan, sisters prepare a *puja thali* (worship tray), apply *tilak* to their brothers, perform *aarti*, and tie the *Rakhi* at an auspicious time. Afterward, brothers give gifts to their sisters and wish them a happy life. In 2026, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on Friday, August 28.

**Shri Krishna Janmashtami 2026**

The holy festival of Shri Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on the *Ashtami Tithi* (eighth day) of the dark fortnight (*Krishna Paksha*) of the *Bhadrapada* month. According to religious belief, it was at midnight on this very day that Lord Krishna incarnated to liberate the people from the tyranny of Kansa and to establish *Dharma* (righteousness). Therefore, on Janmashtami, the infant form of Lord Krishna (*Bal Gopal*) is worshipped with special reverence. Devotees observe a fast on this day and spend the time remembering Lord Krishna. Homes and temples are specially decorated, and there is a tradition of placing the idol of *Bal Gopal* on a swing. At midnight—the time of Lord Krishna's birth—rituals, *aarti*, and the offering of *bhog* (sacred food) take place. Afterward, devotees break their fast by consuming *prasad*. Shri Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on Friday, September 4.

**Observing the *Nirjala* Fast on Hartalika Teej**

The *Teej* festivals falling in the *Bhadrapada* month hold special religious significance. Among them, the Hartalika Teej fast is considered one of the most rigorous. Married women observe this fast praying for their husbands' longevity and marital bliss, while unmarried women worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with the wish of finding a desired life partner. On Hartalika Teej, women traditionally observe a *Nirjala* fast, meaning they abstain from consuming both food and water for the entire day. During the worship, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are venerated according to prescribed rituals. In many places, there is also a tradition of *Jagaran* (night-long vigil), *Bhajan* (devotional songs), and *Kirtan* (devotional chanting). The fast is broken the following day after performing prayers. The Hartalika Teej fast will be observed on September 14.

Ganeshotsav 2026
Ganeshotsav begins on the *Chaturthi* (fourth day) of the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadrapada. The festival spans ten consecutive days and concludes with the immersion of the idol of Lord Ganesha on *Anant Chaturdashi*. During this period, devotees worship Ganpati Bappa with traditional rituals, seeking happiness, prosperity, wisdom, and auspiciousness. In 2026, Ganeshotsav will commence on September 14 and conclude on September 25 with the immersion of the idol.
