Celebrated on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of the Kartik month, mothers observe the Ahoi Ashtami fast, praying for their children's long life, happiness, prosperity, and a healthy life. This fast is observed with great devotion, discipline, and purity. This year, the holy festival of Ahoi Ashtami will be celebrated on October 13th. The scriptures describe special benefits for performing certain actions on this day, while others are also advised to be avoided. Let's explore the dos and don'ts on this day.

What to Do
1. Bathe and Take a Pledge:
Bath before sunrise, wear clean clothes, and take a vow to fast for Ahoi Mata for the well-being of your children.
2. Install an idol or picture of Ahoi Mata:
Draw or install an image of Ahoi Mata, her seven sons, and a porcupine on the wall. Place a water pot nearby and prepare the puja materials.
3. Observe the fast throughout the day without water or eating fruits:
This fast is usually observed without water, but fruits can be consumed as per your health. Remember Goddess Ahoi throughout the day.
4. Worship under the shadow of the stars:
This is the most important part of this fast. In the evening, when the stars become visible in the sky, Goddess Ahoi is worshipped under the shadow of the stars.
At this time, women light lamps, listen to the story, and offer water, considering the stars as witnesses of Goddess Ahoi. Doing so increases the lifespan of their children and removes all sorrows and pains in life.
5. Perform the Vrat Katha and Aarti:
Listen to the story of Goddess Ahoi with devotion and perform the Aarti of "Jai Jai Ahoi Mata." Listening to the story brings the complete benefits of the fast.
6. Bless your children:
End the fast at night and bless your children by feeding them sweets. This is considered a symbol of their bright future.
What Not to Do
1. Do not use needles or sharp objects during the day:
Mythological belief holds that needles, thread, scissors, or any sharp objects should not be used on this day, as this diminishes the benefits of the fast.
2. Do not quarrel or speak harsh words:
Maintain purity in thought, speech, and action on this day. Anger, disputes, or harsh words are considered a violation of the fast's sanctity.
3. Do not harm any living creature:
Since the Ahoi Mata story mentions a porcupine (Sei), do not harm any animal, bird, or insect on this day, and do not dig the ground.

4. Do not cook grains or food (for those observing the fast):
Women observing this fast should not cook or eat food throughout the day. Eat only after breaking the fast at night.
5. Avoid criticizing or thinking negatively about anyone:
The essence of the Ahoi Ashtami fast is to pray for the well-being of children and purify oneself. Therefore, one should avoid negative thoughts on this day.
