Jyeshtha Adhik Maas Dates: Just like the Gregorian calendar, the Hindu Panchang (almanac) consists of 12 months. Every third year, an extra month is added, which is known as *Adhik Maas* (the intercalary month). This month is considered to be of immense religious significance. It is also referred to as *Purushottam Maas*. Religious scriptures and Puranas outline numerous rules, traditions, and beliefs associated with this month.

In the year 2026, *Adhik Maas* coincides with the month of *Jyeshtha*—a conjunction considered particularly special and auspicious. During this period, acts of worship, charity, and spiritual endeavors hold special importance. Let us explore the specific duration of this *Adhik Maas* and the spiritual practices one should undertake during these days.
When does the *Adhik Maas* of *Jyeshtha* begin?
This time, the *Adhik Maas* falling within the month of *Jyeshtha* will commence on Sunday, May 17, and conclude on Monday, June 15.
Why does *Adhik Maas* occur?
*Adhik Maas* occurs due to the discrepancy in duration between the lunar and solar years. According to the lunar cycle, a year comprises approximately 355 days, whereas a solar year consists of 365 days. Consequently, a difference of about 10 days accumulates each year. To reconcile this discrepancy, an extra month is added every third year, which is designated as *Adhik Maas*.
Why is *Adhik Maas* called *Purushottam Maas*?
*Adhik Maas* is referred to as *Purushottam Maas* because Lord Vishnu is considered the presiding deity (*Adhipati*) of this month. *Purushottam* is one of the divine names of Lord Vishnu. It is for this very reason that this month has been bestowed with this name. Throughout this entire month, the worship of Lord Vishnu holds special significance. To seek His divine grace, devotees listen to recitations of the *Shrimad Bhagavat Purana* and engage in acts of devotion and religious service. Furthermore, various beliefs and traditions associated with this month render it even more sacred and unique.
Spiritual Practices to Observe During *Adhik Maas*
Undertaking pilgrimages (*Teerth Yatra*) during *Adhik Maas* is considered highly auspicious. In particular, bathing in holy rivers and performing service (*Seva*) at temples are believed to yield immense spiritual merit. If one is unable to travel to distant locations, bathing and performing worship at a nearby religious site or temple is also considered beneficial.
During this month, the worship of Lord Vishnu and His avatar, Lord Krishna, holds special significance. Regularly engaging in worship, scriptural recitations, and devotional singing helps alleviate life's hardships and fosters an increase in happiness and prosperity.
Keeping a ghee lamp continuously lit before Lord Vishnu—or His sacred symbol—within the home shrine is considered highly auspicious. This practice dispels negativity and ensures that peace and harmony prevail within the home.

During this month, the study and recitation of scriptures associated with the Gita, the Bhagavata, and Lord Vishnu are considered immensely fruitful. This practice calms the mind and leads to the attainment of spiritual wisdom.
Observing fasts and consuming a *sattvic* (pure and wholesome) diet holds special significance during *Adhik Maas*. A disciplined diet and a disciplined lifestyle foster mental tranquility and facilitate spiritual growth.
