Shocking news has emerged for WhatsApp users. A third-party app, masquerading as "WhatsApp Messenger," was listed on the Google Play Store and reportedly garnered over 500,000 downloads. Alarmingly, the app appeared above the official WhatsApp application in search results as a "sponsored" listing, significantly increasing the risk of users inadvertently downloading a fraudulent app.

A user on Reddit first identified the app, after which *Android Authority* and *The Verge* reported on the incident. At the time of *The Verge’s* report on October 16, the app was still live on the Google Play Store. Google did not provide an immediate response regarding the matter.
How was the fake app listed under the name "WhatsApp"?
According to reports, the app was listed as "WhatsApp Messenger" and published by a developer named "Agment Assets sallu." No other apps were listed on the platform under this developer's name.
The fraudulent app utilized icons, screenshots, and descriptions that closely mimicked the genuine WhatsApp application. Consequently, it could be difficult for users to distinguish between the real app and the fake one based solely on the name or logo.
In contrast, the official "WhatsApp Messenger" app is published by "WhatsApp LLC." According to *The Verge*, the official app has over 10 billion downloads, carries an "Editor’s Choice" badge, and has accumulated more than 246 million reviews.
*Android Authority* suggested that the fake app might have leveraged the Google Play Store’s "Early Access" program. If this were the case, users would have had fewer opportunities to see warnings from others, as the app would have had limited public reviews.
How can you avoid fake apps on the Google Play Store?
Before downloading any app, always check the developer's name. In the case of WhatsApp Messenger, the official developer should be listed as "WhatsApp LLC." Additionally, review the number of downloads, user reviews, and other available information about the app.
Keep in mind that an app appearing at the top of search results—or being labeled as "sponsored"—does not guarantee that it is the official application. Therefore, do not install an app based solely on its icon or name.
What should you do if you have downloaded a fake WhatsApp app?
If you have installed a suspicious WhatsApp app, uninstall it immediately and check the permissions granted to it within your phone's settings. If you have entered your account details or a verification code into such an app, take the necessary steps to secure your WhatsApp account.
Never share your WhatsApp registration code with anyone else. This incident serves as a reminder that not every app found on an official app store is trustworthy. It is essential to verify the developer's identity before downloading any application.
