Empty nest divorce is a growing term in the world of relationships. It refers to a situation where, after 20-30 years of marriage, children leave home for studies or employment, leaving the parents alone. Immediately or shortly after this, when the couple decides to separate, it is called an empty nest divorce.

There was a time when divorce was only reported in newlyweds, but today, the number of couples separating in their 50s or 60s is increasing. Let's understand the reasons behind this.
What are the causes of empty nest divorce?
When children leave home, the barrier between husband and wife that has held them together for years often crumbles. There may be several underlying reasons behind this:
Child-Centric Parenting - For many couples, raising children becomes the sole purpose of life. For years, their only topic of conversation has revolved around their children's education, their health, and their future. As soon as the children leave home, the couple realizes they have nothing left to talk about. They become like strangers to each other.
Long-suppressed differences - Often, couples suppress their conflicts and resentments for the sake of their children. They believe that staying together is essential to prevent the children from breaking up their home. When the children become independent, they feel that their responsibilities are now fulfilled and they are free to live on their own. This leads to the emergence of long-suppressed bitterness and divorce.
Identity crisis - This is especially true for women or men whose entire identity is limited to being parents. When they are no longer actively involved in parenting, they feel a sense of emptiness. This emotional stress sometimes turns into irritability and isolation towards their partner.
Prioritize yourself - Due to improved healthcare facilities, people are now prioritizing living alone or living a new life with peace and happiness rather than living a suffocating life. The old stigma surrounding divorce among older people is also diminishing in society.
How can we avoid this?
Rediscover friendships - After the children leave, husband and wife should develop new hobbies together.
Communicate openly - Start talking about your feelings and desires, not just about the children.
Personal space - Motivate each other to pursue your personal hobbies.
