Significance of the Month of Vaishakh

The divine sage *Devarshi* Narada expounded upon the significance of the month of Vaishakh to King Ambarisha. This account is detailed in the *Skanda Purana*. He stated that just as the Vedas and Mantras are considered supreme among all branches of knowledge, the *Kalpataru* (wish-fulfilling tree) among trees, *Kamadhenu* (the divine cow) among cows, *Garuda* among birds, and gold among metals; similarly, Vaishakh is regarded as the most excellent among the twelve months of the year.

In this month, the spiritual merit (*Punya*) acquired through ritual bathing and acts of charity is considered *Akshaya*—imperishable. Such merit is never depleted; it remains with the individual forever. It is for this very reason that *Akshaya Tritiya*—the festival that bestows imperishable merit—also falls within this month. Consequently, the importance of worship (*Puja*), scriptural recitation (*Paath*), chanting (*Japa*), meditation (*Dhyana*), and similar spiritual practices is significantly heightened during the month of Vaishakh.

How Was the Month of Vaishakh Named?

In the Hindu calendar system, the name of a month is determined based on the specific *Nakshatra* (lunar mansion) in which the Moon is positioned on the day of the *Purnima* (full moon). The month of Vaishakh derives its name from the *Vishakha Nakshatra*. Since the Moon resides in the *Vishakha Nakshatra* on the day of *Vaishakh Purnima*, the month was named Vaishakh.
