The Simhachalam Temple is a divine shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu's Narasimha avatar. Here, the layer of sandalwood paste covering the idol of Lord Narasimha is removed for only 24 hours a year—and it is exclusively during this time that the temple opens its doors for *darshan* (worship). **Where is this Divine Abode Located?**
Situated in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, the Simhachalam Temple represents a magnificent confluence of faith and architecture. The Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Temple is perched atop the Simhachalam hill, approximately 16 kilometers away from Visakhapatnam. For this reason, the shrine is also popularly known as the Simhachalam Temple. It is believed that this temple was originally built by Prahlada himself.

**The Reason Behind the Sandalwood Application**
Lord Vishnu's Narasimha avatar is regarded as a symbol of valor and ferocity. According to mythological legends, after slaying the demon Hiranyakashipu, Lord Narasimha's wrath intensified to an extreme degree. All attempts by the other deities to pacify Him proved futile.

Eventually, in response to the prayers of His supreme devotee, Prahlada, the Lord calmed down and manifested Himself upon the Simhachalam hill. To mitigate His intense radiance and ferocity, He is kept cool through the application of sandalwood paste. This is the reason He remains covered in sandalwood throughout the year—to ensure that His form retains a gentle and benign appearance.

**When Does the Temple Open?**
Due to being encased in a thick layer of sandalwood paste, the idol of Lord Narasimha appears to resemble a *Shivling* (the iconic representation of Lord Shiva). This sandalwood covering is removed only on the day of *Akshaya Tritiya*—an event known as *Nijarupa Darshan* (viewing of the true form) or *Chandanotsavam* (the Festival of Sandalwood). 

Devotees can behold the Lord's actual idol only on this specific day.

Consequently, on *Akshaya Tritiya*, the crowds of devotees thronging the temple present a truly spectacular sight. Devotees also visit the shrine on the auspicious occasion of *Narasimha Jayanti*. In the year 2026, *Akshaya Tritiya* will be celebrated on April 19th, while the festival of *Narasimha Jayanti* will be observed on April 30th.

Typically, in other temples dedicated to Lord Narasimha, one encounters His fierce form; however, at the Simhachalam Temple, the Lord is enshrined alongside Goddess Lakshmi in an extremely gentle and serene posture.
