How to Perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva: To seek the blessings of Lord Shiva, devotees perform *Jalabhishek* (ritual offering of water) on the *Shivling* alongside their prayers. It is believed that Mahadev is pleased if a devotee offers even just water with a sincere heart and devotion. However, certain rules must be followed while offering water to ensure the full benefits of the worship are attained. Let us understand the essential rules associated with *Jalabhishek* and the mistakes to avoid during the process.

**Correct Direction**
First and foremost, one must pay special attention to the direction while offering water. According to belief, one should not face East or South while offering water to the *Shivling*; facing North is considered auspicious. Offering water while sitting or standing in this direction enhances the spiritual impact of the worship and helps in quickly attaining Lord Shiva's grace.

**Offer Water in a Continuous Stream**
Furthermore, the method of offering water is crucial. The water should be poured in a steady and continuous stream. Offering water intermittently or in a broken stream is not considered auspicious. Therefore, ensure that the stream of water falls onto the *Shivling* without interruption.

**Do Not Offer Water Using a Conch Shell**
Another important point is that a conch shell (*Shankh*) should not be used to offer water to the *Shivling*. According to religious beliefs, offering water via a conch shell is not considered appropriate; instead, it is better to use a *Lota* (traditional water vessel) or any other suitable container.

**Circumambulation (Parikrama)**
Performing *Parikrama* (circumambulation) after *Jalabhishek* is considered auspicious, but it must be done correctly. When circumambulating the *Shivling*, always follow a semi-circular path (shaped like a half-moon). Be careful not to cross the point where the offered water flows down, as stepping over this stream is considered contrary to the sanctity of the worship.

**Chanting Mantras**
Along with these rules, chanting mantras dedicated to Lord Shiva while offering water is also extremely beneficial. Even if you are unable to recite the elaborate mantras, you can offer water while chanting ‘Om’. The significance of *Jalabhishek* (ritual offering of water) is particularly heightened during the month of *Sawan*. Offering *Belpatra*, *Bhang*, and *Dhatura* along with water during this period is considered to make the worship even more fruitful.
