If, for some reason, you are unable to visit a temple or Shivalaya on Mahashivratri, there is no need to worry. Lord Shiva resides not only in temples but also in true devotion and faith. You can attain the same virtue by worshipping at home with complete faith. Purity of mind, faith, and devotion are essential.

First, take a bath in the morning and wear clean clothes. Clean the place of worship in your home and install a Shivalinga or a picture of Lord Shiva there. Begin the puja by lighting a lamp. Then, perform an abhishekam to Lord Shiva with water, milk, or panchamrit. Chant the mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" while performing the abhishekam. This mantra is considered very powerful and brings peace to the mind.
The Special Importance of Belpatra and Datura
Lord Shiva is very fond of Belpatra and Datura. Take 108 Belpatra leaves, write "Om Namah Shivaya" on each one, and offer them with devotion to the Shivalinga. You can also offer Datura, cannabis, fruits, and sweets. It is believed that even a single Belpatra offered with a true heart pleases Lord Shiva.
The Importance of Mahashivratri According to Pandit Ji
According to Pandit Damodar Joshi, the true significance of Mahashivratri is believed to be at night. "Shivratri" means the night of Shiva. In earlier times, most auspicious ceremonies and marriages were performed during the night. Night is considered the best time for meditation and worship. Although today, due to social customs, many events are held during the day, the special benefits of Shivaratri worship are achieved only at night. Chanting this mantra yields special results:
Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam.
Urvarukamiv Bandhanan Mrityormukshiya Ma'amritaat॥
Puja Timing
Mahashivratri will be celebrated on February 15th. The first phase of worship is from 6:00 pm to 9:13 pm. The second period will be from 9:14 pm to 12:27 am. The third period is from 12:27 pm to 3:42 am. Performing the Jalabhishek and Rudrabhishek of Lord Shiva during these periods is considered extremely auspicious.
Amrit Muhurta and Special Abhishek
The time from 5 am to 11 am is considered Amrit Muhurta. Performing Rudrabhishek and Jalabhishek during this period brings special results. The second auspicious period is from 8:24 am to 9:48 am. During this time, Abhishek is fed sugarcane juice, curd, ghee, honey, and milk. This is called Panchamrit Abhishek.

Finally, remember that Lord Shiva is hungry for devotion. Whether you go to the temple or worship at home, if your devotion is true, Lord Shiva will surely be pleased and fulfill all your wishes.
