Planning to send your bike or bicycle to another city by train? Find out the cost and the documents required..

Transporting your bicycle or motorcycle from one city to another via Indian Railways is quite convenient, provided you are aware of the correct rules.

Yes, you read that right. People often face hassles at railway stations due to incomplete information. Therefore, in this article, let us explore the proper way to transport your bicycle or two-wheeler by train and the essential rules associated with it.

**Rules for Carrying a Bicycle**
**No Free Allowance:** During a train journey, a bicycle is not considered part of your 'free luggage' allowance (like a standard suitcase or bag). Regardless of the travel class, a bicycle must always be booked as separate luggage or a parcel.

**Where the Bicycle is Stored:** You cannot take the bicycle with you into the passenger coach. After booking, it is stored in the guard's coach located at either the front or the rear of the train. However, if you have a folding bicycle that fits easily into a small bag, you may be permitted to carry it inside the cabin, subject to certain conditions.

**Booking Timing:** Arrive at the station's parcel office about two to three hours before your train's scheduled departure on the day of travel. Present your confirmed ticket and a valid ID card, pay the required fee, and obtain the luggage receipt.

**Consequences of Carrying Without Booking:** If you take the bicycle onto the platform or into a train coach without obtaining a receipt, checking staff may confiscate it. Additionally, you could be liable to pay a fine that is several times the standard parcel charge.

**Complete Process for Shipping a Bike**
**Forms and Details:** To ship your bike, first obtain a form from the parcel booking office. You will need to fill in details such as your mobile number, destination, and vehicle specifications. Railway officials will then weigh and inspect your bike.

**Essential Documents:** At the time of parcel booking, you must have your Aadhaar card, an active mobile number, the bike's Registration Certificate (RC), and first-party insurance documents. First-party insurance is required so that a claim can be filed in the event of any damage during transit. If the bike is registered in someone else's name, a photocopy will not suffice; you must present the original documents or an authorization letter.

Fuel and Packing: Railway safety regulations mandate that the vehicle's fuel tank be completely drained. Remove the bike's side mirrors before shipping. Sturdy packing is required to protect the handlebars and the entire body of the vehicle. Vendors at the station charge between ₹300 and ₹600 for packing, depending on the vehicle's size.

Don't Lose the Receipt; Know the Delivery Rules
Estimated Cost: The shipping cost for your bike depends on its weight, the distance to be covered, and the category of the train. As an estimate, the total cost—including parcel charges and packing—to ship a bike over a distance of 800 kilometers could be around ₹3,000.

The Receipt is Crucial: Keep the original receipt issued after booking the parcel very safe. You will need to present this receipt at the destination station to claim your bike or bicycle.

Don't Delay Delivery: Collect your vehicle promptly after it reaches its destination. If your bike remains at the station for more than six days, the Railways will levy extra charges.

Vehicle May Arrive on a Different Train: Your bike doesn't need to be shipped on the same train you are traveling on. If there is no space in that train's brake van, the Railways may ship the vehicle on a different train at their discretion.
