Mahashivratri 2026: The sacred festival of Mahashivratri symbolizes the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to the Hindu calendar, this great festival is celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Phalgun. This year, Mahashivratri will be celebrated on February 15th. On this day, Shiva devotees fast according to their faith and offer special prayers to Lord Shiva. It is believed that observing the Mahashivratri fast brings one the attainment of Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha. However, the full benefits of the fast are achieved only when observed with the correct method and rules. So, let's learn the correct rules of fasting in this article.

Wake up before sunrise on Mahashivratri.
Wear yellow clothes.
Take water, rice grains, and flowers in your hand and take a vow to fast in front of Lord Shiva.
Performing Shivaratri puja during all four hours of the night is fruitful.
Anoint the Shivalinga with milk, yogurt, ghee, and honey every hour.
Maintain physical and mental purity during the fast.
Practice celibacy.
Avoid anger and evil.
The main ritual of Mahashivratri is a night vigil.
On this auspicious occasion, staying awake all night and reciting the Shiva Purana destroys all sins.
The Shivratri fast is broken the next day after sunrise.
At the time of Parana, first offer food to Lord Shiva, then donate to Brahmins, and eat satvik food yourself.
What to eat during the fast?
Apples, bananas, oranges, papayas, dates, and all types of dry fruits can be eaten during the fast.
Sabudana khichdi or kheer, puris made from buckwheat or water chestnut flour, and pakodas can be eaten during the fast.
Boiled potato curry and roasted sweet potatoes can be eaten.
To keep the body hydrated, you can drink milk, buttermilk, coconut water, and fresh fruit juice.
Only rock salt can be used in the fasting food.

What not to eat during the fast?
Do not consume any type of grains such as wheat, rice, pulses, or gram flour.
Do not use garlic and onion in food even by mistake, as it can break the fast.
Plain salt and turmeric are not used in the fasting food.
Stay completely away from meat, alcohol, and any kind of intoxicant on this day, whether you are fasting or not.
Avoid any kind of dispute on this day.
