Mahashivratri Update: Why is Mahashivratri celebrated? Know the story related to Lord Shiva..

Mahashivratri 2025: On the night of Falgun Krishna Chaturdashi, the infinite, inaccessible, imperishable Adidev Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Jyotirlinga with the same effect as millions of suns. This is the reason why it is celebrated every year as a grand festival on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Falgun month.

Mahashivratri is Maharatri which has a close relationship with the Shiva element. This festival is an auspicious festival of the divine incarnation of Shiva. The night of his incarnation from formless to real form is called Mahashivratri. Lord Shiva frees us from vices like lust, anger, greed, attachment, envy, etc., and provides us with ultimate happiness, peace, and prosperity. Mahashivratri fast is extremely auspicious and full of divinity. This fast is considered to give all the four purusharthas - Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha.

Mahashivratri is the day of the union of Shiva-Parvati.

According to mythological texts, Goddess Sati was reborn as Parvati. To get Shiva as her husband, she started performing rigorous penance in Gaurikund, five kilometers away from Triyugi Narayan. Mahagyani Shiva tested Gauri even after knowing everything, but she won Shiva's heart with her rigorous penance. Love started pouring from her expressionless eyes. On this day, the marriage of Lord Shiva and Adishakti Maa Parvati was solemnized with great celebration and Parvati came to Mount Kailash with Shiva. Shiva-Parvati is the root of the inspiration of a husband-wife who is completely dedicated to the family, their marriage is considered ideal, hence Shiva-Parvati are immersed in religion and art in our minds.

Importance of Shiva

It is mentioned in Shiva Purana that the symbol of the formless form of Shiva, 'Ling' appeared on this holy day during Mahanisha and was first worshipped by Brahma and Vishnu. According to this, the devotee who fasts and controls his senses day and night on Shivaratri and worships Shiva with all his strength and power with pure devotion immediately receives the full benefits of worshipping Shiva throughout the year. This day is also a day for every living being to achieve great success.

The person who worships Lord Bholenath, who gives supreme success, on this day is extremely fortunate. Lord Shri Ram himself has said that- 'Shiv drohi mam das kahaava! So nar mohi sapnehu nahin bhaava!!'That is, the one who wants to attain me by betraying Shiva cannot attain me even in his dreams.

This is the reason why along with the worship of Shiva in the month of Shravan, the recitation of Shri Ramcharitmanas is also very important. According to another story, once Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva which fast can give her the best devotion and virtue, then Bhole Shankar himself told the importance of this day that whoever fasts on the night of Chaturdashi of Falgun Krishna Paksha, pleases me. I am not as pleased with Abhishek, clothes, incense, Arghya flowers etc. as I am with fasting.
