Mahashivratri is a very sacred and important festival in Hinduism. Although Shivaratri occurs every month, the Shivaratri that falls on the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Phalgun is called Mahashivratri. According to mythological beliefs, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married on this day. This is why this date is considered especially sacred. This day is very dear to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is believed that devotees who observe a fast on this day with a true heart and worship Lord Shiva with proper rituals will surely have their wishes fulfilled. The Shiva Purana also mentions that by offering water to the Shivalinga and worshipping with devotion on Mahashivratri, Lord Shiva is pleased and blesses devotees with happiness and prosperity.

Learn what the Astrologer of Deoghar says.
Pandit Nandkishore Mudgal, the renowned astrologer of the Mudgal Astrology Center located at the Pagal Baba Ashram in Deoghar, said that everyone should observe the fast on Mahashivratri. Whether it's men or women, this fast symbolizes self-purification, restraint, and devotion. Fasting on this day purifies both mind and body and paves the way for spiritual progress.
People Who Shouldn't Keep the Fast
Astrologer Pandit Nandkishore Mudgal says that certain people should not observe this fast. According to the astrologer, children under the age of 8 should not fast, as it is not good for their health. Furthermore, the elderly, seriously ill individuals, pregnant women, and women during menstruation should also refrain from fasting. Such individuals should prioritize their health and, if they wish, may simply worship with devotion. Furthermore, no one is prohibited from observing the Mahashivratri fast.

Learn the correct rules of the fast.
The Mahashivratri fast is not simply about fasting; it requires observing the correct rules. Those observing the fast should wake up early in the morning, bathe, and wear clean clothes. Afterward, they should meditate on Lord Shiva and take a vow to fast. One should maintain restraint, pure thoughts, and a calm mind throughout the day. On Mahashivratri, Lord Shiva is worshipped in four watches. During each watch, the Shivalinga is anointed with water, milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and Bel leaves. At least two watches of worship should be performed. Chanting the mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" during worship is considered extremely fruitful. Fruits should be consumed only after the puja.
