PTM Questions for Parents: As the annual examinations draw to a close, one thought occupies the minds of parents: the year's final PTM (Parent-Teacher Meeting). This is arguably the most significant meeting of the year; it is not merely about collecting a report card, but rather an opportunity to understand how our child's personality has evolved over the past year. Often, during PTMs, we tend to get fixated solely on numbers and grades; however, a child's social and emotional development is equally—if not more—important. Therefore, we have compiled a list of questions designed to help you gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of your child.
Here are 9 essential questions to ask the teacher during the PTM:
1. Does my child feel comfortable in the classroom?
This is a fundamental, yet crucial, question. It reveals the extent to which your child feels secure within the school environment. If a child feels emotionally safe, they are far more likely to perform better academically.
2. How does he/she interact with other children?
Asking the teacher this question provides insight into your child's social confidence. Does he/she make friends easily, or does he/she tend to be hesitant?
3. Does my child prefer playing in groups or playing alone?
This helps you gauge your child's level of social engagement. Some children are introverted, while others thrive in crowds; both are perfectly normal traits—what matters is simply understanding your child's natural temperament.
4. How does he/she react when things don't go according to plan?
For instance, how do they handle losing a game or having to wait for their turn? This question is vital for understanding your child's emotional regulation skills and their capacity for patience and tolerance.
5. Does he/she participate in classroom discussions and activities?
This serves as an indicator of your child's self-confidence. Do they raise their hand to answer questions, or do they tend to sit quietly?
6. Who are his/her closest friends in the class?
Every mother needs to be aware of her child's companions and his social circle. This allows you to understand the influences shaping his behavior.
7. How does he resolve disagreements or conflicts with other children?
School is the place where children first learn the art of problem-solving. Does he resort to fighting, cry, or attempt to resolve the issue through dialogue?
8. Does my child help others or demonstrate empathy?
Beyond academics, it is crucial for a child—as a human being—to possess empathy and compassion. Inquiring about this with the teacher may well fill you with pride.
9. Is he comfortable asking for help when needed?
A self-reliant and self-confident child recognizes when he requires assistance. If he does not hesitate to ask the teacher questions or seek help, it is a positive sign of his development.
Tip: Carry a small notepad with you when attending a PTM (Parent-Teacher Meeting). As the teacher responds, jot down the key points so that you can reflect on them calmly once you return home and effectively support your child.
