Kanwar Yatra: If you plan to undertake the Kanwar Yatra during Sawan, start preparing now..

Kanwar Yatra 2026: List of Essentials – This year, the month of Sawan begins on July 30th, coinciding with the *Pratipada Tithi* (first day) of the *Krishna Paksha* (waning phase of the moon) of the Shravan month. The Kanwar Yatra also commences on this day. Devotees of Lord Shiva undertake this pilgrimage to seek the fulfillment of their wishes. During the journey, devotees carry a *Kanwar* (a bamboo or wooden pole structure) to fetch holy water, which is subsequently used to perform *Abhishek* (ritual bathing) on Lord Shiva. The pilgrimage is undertaken on foot and is quite arduous. If you intend to participate in the Kanwar Yatra this year, you must prepare in advance, as specific items are required. Let us look at the essential items and *Puja* (worship) materials needed for the journey.

Kanwar Yatra 2026: List of Essentials
A *Kanwar*: This should be made of sturdy bamboo or wood, capable of securely holding and carrying vessels of *Gangajal* (water from the Ganges) or other holy water.

Water Vessel: Water is central to the Kanwar Yatra; it is carried in the *Kanwar* to the Shiva temple. The vessel must be robust to prevent leakage or spillage. While metal vessels are common, people also use plastic containers.

*Kanwar* Decoration Items: The *Kanwar* is often beautifully adorned for the journey. You can decorate it with colorful flowers and fabrics, as well as images of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, their family, and the *Ganas* (divine attendants). Elements such as a *Trishul* (trident), *Damru* (small drum), and *Rudraksha* beads can also be attached.

Bell: You should attach one or more melodious bells to the *Kanwar*. As you walk and chant praises to Lord Shiva, the sweet sound of the bell will help sustain your spirit and guide you toward your destination, making the arduous journey smoother.

Shiva *Bhajans*, Songs, and Music: If you are undertaking the journey in a group, *Bhajans* (devotional songs), music, and chants dedicated to Lord Shiva can help make the pilgrimage more enjoyable and less strenuous. New red or saffron-colored clothes: Pilgrims wear new clothes during the Kanwar Yatra. You can wear red or saffron attire; this ensures all pilgrims appear uniform—equal, with no distinctions of high or low status.

Essential medicines: The Kanwar Yatra involves walking long distances; if you are not accustomed to this, you may face health issues. Therefore, carry essential medicines for fever and pain, along with Band-Aids, cotton, and antiseptic cream.

Ganga Jal (Holy Water of the Ganges): A key condition of the pilgrimage is that the water being carried must remain pure. If you stop to rest or attend to daily routines, bathe afterward and purify yourself with Ganga Jal before proceeding with the Kanwar. Keep a separate container for this purpose.

Place a sponge or a padded cloth at the center of the Kanwar so that your shoulder does not get injured while carrying it.

Important points for the Kanwar Yatra:
The Kanwar Yatra is a means to fulfill wishes and seek the blessings of Lord Shiva; therefore, abstain from consuming *tamasic* items such as tobacco, alcohol, *bhang*, and meat.
If you are undertaking the Kanwar Yatra, keep your mind, body, and speech pure, and pursue your objective peacefully.

If you plan to undertake the journey, start practicing walking 4–5 kilometers daily to prepare yourself mentally and physically for the long trek.
Carry items such as a torch, power bank, raincoat, and identity proof for the journey.
For the *Jalabhishek* (ritual offering of water), keep items like *Akshat* (unbroken rice grains), sandalwood paste, *Belpatra* (Bilva leaves), incense sticks, and matches in a waterproof bag.
