Kanwar Yatra 2026: The month of Sawan is considered the most sacred time for worshipping Lord Shiva. Every year, millions of Shiva devotees undertake the Kanwar Yatra to fetch water from the Ganges and perform *Jalabhishek* (ritual bathing with water) on the *Shivling*. Devotees have questions regarding the commencement and the date of *Jalabhishek* for the 2026 Kanwar Yatra. Let us find out when the Kanwar Yatra begins and which rules are considered religiously essential to follow during this period.

When will the Kanwar Yatra 2026 begin?
According to the Hindu calendar, the month of Sawan begins on July 30, 2026. The Kanwar Yatra is also considered to commence on this day. During this period, devotees fetch water from the Ganges at Haridwar, Gangotri, Gaumukh, Rishikesh, and other holy pilgrimage sites to perform *Jalabhishek* on Lord Shiva at their respective local temples.
When will the Kanwar *Jalabhishek* take place?
Sawan Shivratri will be celebrated on August 11, 2026. Most *Kanwariyas* (pilgrims) complete their journey by performing *Jalabhishek* on Lord Shiva on this day. However, devotees traveling from long distances may perform the ritual on various other dates throughout the month of Sawan.
Keep these rules in mind during the Kanwar Yatra.
According to religious beliefs, once the *Kanwar* (the pole carrying the holy water) is lifted, it should not be placed directly on the ground. If one needs to rest, the *Kanwar* should be placed on a stand, a wooden support, or a clean, elevated spot.
There is a tradition of consuming *Sattvic* (pure/wholesome) food during the journey. Onion, garlic, non-vegetarian food, and *Tamasic* (heavy/impure) foods are avoided. Additionally, it is advised to abstain from alcohol, tobacco, cigarettes, and any form of intoxicants.
Physical and mental purity holds special significance during the Kanwar Yatra. Wear clean clothes and, as far as possible, wear saffron-colored attire. If a state of impurity arises for any reason, one should bathe and change into clean clothes before touching the *Kanwar* again. It is considered auspicious to proceed on the journey while chanting mantras and hymns dedicated to Lord Shiva and raising the 'Bol Bam' chant. The tradition involves undertaking the pilgrimage with a calm and reverent mind, while refraining from anger, disputes, abusive language, and inappropriate behavior.

The Kanwar Yatra is not merely a religious pilgrimage but also a symbol of restraint, service, and devotion. Therefore, respect others, maintain cleanliness, and complete the journey while adhering to all the rules.
