How to Observe the Janmashtami Fast?: This year, Janmashtami falls on Friday, September 4th. On this day, devotees observe a fast and worship Lord Shri Krishna. The worship takes place during the *Nishita Kaal* (midnight period) because Lord Shri Krishna was born at midnight. Those who observe the fast and perform the rituals with devotion receive Lord Shri Krishna's blessings, leading to the fulfillment of their wishes. If you intend to observe the Janmashtami fast this year, you should be aware of the rules and rituals involved.

Rules for the Janmashtami Fast
Consume only *Sattvic* (pure, vegetarian) food starting the day before Janmashtami—that is, from September 3rd.
Those observing the fast must remain pure in thought, speech, and action. Avoid harboring feelings of hatred, violence, dishonesty, or theft.
The Janmashtami fast begins at sunrise on the *Ashtami* (eighth day) of the *Krishna Paksha* (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadrapada and continues until sunrise on the *Navami* (ninth day).
Do not consume grains during the fast; instead, subsist on fruits (*phalahar*) and milk.
The person observing the fast should spend the entire day and night immersed in devotion and *bhajans* (devotional songs) dedicated to the Lord.
The *Nishita Muhurat* (auspicious time) for the Janmashtami puja—marking the birth and celebration of Lord Laddu Gopal—is from 11:57 PM on the night of September 4th to 12:43 AM on September 5th. Perform the worship and celebrate the occasion during this time.
People usually break their fast after the puja by consuming *Charanamrit* and *Panjiri*; however, in some regions, the custom is to break the fast (*Paran*) after sunrise the following day. Follow the tradition practiced in your region.
Strictly observe the rules of *Brahmacharya* (celibacy) on this day.
Do not get angry on the day of the Janmashtami fast; exercise restraint in your speech. Do not speak untruths, and stay away from negative thoughts.
Janmashtami Puja Rituals
On Janmashtami, wake up during the *Brahma Muhurat* (between 4:30 AM and 5:15 AM), complete your bath and morning ablutions, and wear clean clothes.
Afterward, take water, *Akshat* (unbroken rice grains), and flowers in your hands and take a solemn vow (*Sankalp*) to observe the Janmashtami fast and perform the worship. Amidst the melodious sounds of conch shells and bells, Lord Krishna—in his infant form, Bal Gopal—is born during the auspicious *Nishita Muhurat* of Janmashtami.
He is bathed in *Panchamrit* and dressed in new attire; he is then adorned beautifully with flowers, sandalwood paste, garlands, and other ornaments.

Next, he is placed in a lovely cradle and gently rocked while lullabies are sung.
Offerings (*Bhog*) consisting of *Charanamrit*, *Panjiri*, *Panchmeva* (a mix of five dry fruits), *Makhan-Mishri* (butter and rock sugar), fruits, and various sweets are then presented to the deity.
Finally, the fast is concluded by partaking of the *Prasad*, or alternatively, the fast is completed the following morning after sunrise.
