If someone in the family has suffered an untimely death, be sure to perform these 3 remedies during Pitru Paksha..

Pitru Paksha 2026: Remedies for Salvation (Moksha)
Pitru Paksha—a period dedicated to worshipping, appeasing, and satisfying one's ancestors—is currently underway. In Hinduism, it is believed that during Pitru Paksha, our ancestors visit Earth and reside here for the entire fortnight. Rituals such as *Tarpan* (offering water), *Pind Daan*, *Shraddha*, and the donation of food and clothing are performed to satisfy them; pleased by these acts, they bestow their blessings. While *Tarpan* and *Shraddha* are typically performed on the anniversary of death for those who passed away after completing their natural lifespan, a specific day during Pitru Paksha is designated for those who died prematurely (untimely death). Additionally, special remedies are undertaken during this period to bring peace to their wandering souls and help them attain salvation (*Moksha*) through divine grace.

What is Untimely Death (*Akaal Mrityu*)?
An untimely death refers to a demise that occurs before a person has completed their natural lifespan. For instance, if a life ends—whether due to an accident, fire, incurable disease, poisoning, or suicide—before the completion of the lifespan ordained by God, it falls into the category of untimely death.

Remedies During Pitru Paksha for Ancestors Who Died Prematurely
According to Swati Saxena, an astrologer from Kanpur, if a family member has suffered an untimely death, one should recite or listen to the *Mahatmya* (glories/significance) of the *Shrimad Bhagavat Purana* during the 15 days of Pitru Paksha. Doing so helps the soul attain salvation.

The *Chaturdashi* Tithi (the fourteenth day of the lunar fortnight) is designated for performing *Tarpan* and *Shraddha* for ancestors who died prematurely; this observance is known as *Chaturdashi Shraddha*. The Chaturdashi Tithi is dedicated to Lord Shiva; through His grace, even a person destined for untimely death can attain longevity. This year, Chaturdashi Shraddh falls on October 9.

According to the Panchang (Hindu almanac), the Chaturdashi Tithi begins at 10:15 PM on October 8 and continues until 9:35 PM on October 9. The *Kutup Muhurat* for Chaturdashi Shraddh is from 11:45 AM to 12:31 PM, lasting 47 minutes. Meanwhile, the *Rohin Muhurat* on that day is from 12:31 PM to 1:18 PM, also lasting 47 minutes. The *Aparahna Kaal* (afternoon period) will span from 1:18 PM to 3:38 PM, a duration of 2 hours and 20 minutes.

On the day of Chaturdashi Shraddh, after bathing in the morning, fill a vessel with water and mix in some *Gangajal* (holy water from the Ganges). Then, add black sesame seeds to it. Perform *Abhishek* (ritual bathing) of Lord Shiva with this water while invoking the name of the person who met with an untimely death. Pray to Lord Shiva to grant *Moksha* (liberation) to that family member and ensure they receive the spiritual merit of the worship.

**Mantra for *Tarpan* (Offering) to Ancestors**

When performing *Tarpan* for your ancestors, chant one of the following mantras: "Om Pitru Devatayai Namah," "Om Pitrubhyah Swadha Namah," or "Om Sarvapitrubhyah Swadha Namah." This is the mantra for making the offering; chanting it will satisfy and gratify your ancestors.
