It is rare to speak of festivals in India without mentioning sweets. Whether it is the celebration of Independence Day, the bond of love between siblings on Raksha Bandhan, or a special family gathering, no celebration feels complete without a touch of sweetness. Among such occasions, Gulab Jamun stands out as one of the most beloved traditional sweets. Its soft texture, sweet syrup, and exquisite taste appeal to people of all ages.

People often think that making juicy, spongy Gulab Jamuns—like the ones found in shops—at home is difficult; however, with the right ingredients and a few simple tips, they can be easily prepared. Homemade Gulab Jamuns are not only fresh and delicious, but they also allow you to control the sweetness level and ensure the use of pure ingredients. Let’s learn the complete method for making soft, juicy, professional-quality Gulab Jamuns.
Ingredients required to make Gulab Jamun
To make delicious Gulab Jamun:
250 grams Mawa (Khoya)
3 tablespoons Maida (all-purpose flour)
A pinch of baking soda
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
4-5 cardamom pods
A few saffron strands (optional)
Ghee or refined oil for frying
Pistachio or almond slivers (for garnishing)
Using high-quality Khoya results in softer Gulab Jamuns.
Easy method to make soft Gulab Jamun
Step 1- First, mash the Khoya thoroughly to ensure there are no lumps.
Step 2- Now, mix in the Maida and baking soda to form a soft dough.
Step 3- Shape the mixture into small, smooth balls.
Ensure there are no cracks in the balls, as cracks can cause the Gulab Jamuns to burst while frying.
The right way to make the sugar syrup
Step 1-
Combine sugar and water in a vessel and bring to a boil over medium heat. Step 2- Add cardamom and saffron to it.
Step 3- Cook for about 8–10 minutes to prepare a light syrup.
Step 4- The syrup should not be too thick; a thinner syrup allows the Gulab Jamuns to absorb the liquid effectively and become sweet all the way through.
Trick for perfect frying (Halwai-style)
Step 1- Heat ghee or oil in a pan over medium heat.
Step 2- Keep the flame low and fry the Gulab Jamuns, stirring continuously, until they turn golden brown.
Step 3- Frying on high heat can cause them to burn on the outside while remaining raw on the inside.
Step 4- Immediately after frying, transfer the hot Gulab Jamuns into the warm syrup and let them soak for at least 2 hours.
This ensures they become incredibly soft and juicy.
Serving tips and special suggestions
Gulab Jamuns can be served either warm or cold.
Serving them with vanilla ice cream, rabri, or dry fruits enhances the flavor even more.
If preparing in advance for a festival, you can make the Gulab Jamuns a day early and store them in the refrigerator.
Warm them up slightly before serving so they taste fresh.
