In Uttar Pradesh, the festival of Deepotsav is celebrated with great fervor. For several days surrounding Diwali, people engage in the use of fireworks; however, the loud noise and smoke from these firecrackers take the heaviest toll on animals. Pets, in particular, become frightened by the intense noise and, under stress, may even stop eating or drinking. Consequently, it is essential to take special care of your pets during the Diwali period. Senior veterinarians in Agra have shared some important tips to protect pets from the noise of firecrackers and the associated toxic smoke.

**Noise from firecrackers causes stress in pets**
Dr. Sanjeev Nehru, a senior veterinarian in Agra, explains that the noise from firecrackers can be extremely dangerous for pets. In many cases, the resulting extreme fear and stress can lead to a deterioration in their health. Pets should never be left outdoors during fireworks displays; instead, keep them in a quiet room within the house. Dim the lights and play soft music to help mask the sound of the firecrackers outside.
He suggests that small cotton balls can be placed in the pets' ears—though care must be taken not to insert them too deeply. Monitor their condition periodically. If necessary, medication may be administered, but only under the guidance of a veterinarian; never provide any medication without professional advice. Additionally, ensure they have access to clean water and their favorite food. If they become frightened, handle them with affection rather than scolding them.
**Smoke from firecrackers can harm respiratory health and eyes**
Dr. Sanjeev Nehru notes that the fireworks used during Diwali are detrimental to the health of animals, just as they are to humans. The toxic smoke released by firecrackers can affect a pet's respiratory system. Exposure to this smoke can lead to issues such as difficulty breathing, coughing, and even asthma-like conditions. He explained that fine particles released into the air during fireworks can cause eye irritation, redness, and infections. In some cases, smoke can cause serious damage to the eyes of pets. Therefore, pet owners should ensure that their animals are kept away from areas affected by smoke and are instead kept in a safe environment indoors. If any signs of respiratory distress or eye-related issues appear, consult a veterinarian immediately.
Keep clean water and their favorite food accessible to pets.
According to Dr. Sanjeev Nehru, the loud noise from firecrackers during Diwali can disrupt a pet's daily routine. Sometimes, out of anxiety, pets may begin to drink more water than usual. In such situations, it is essential to ensure that an adequate supply of clean, fresh drinking water is available in the room where they are being kept safe. Additionally, keep their favorite food nearby so that they do not stop eating or drinking due to stress.
He noted that, if necessary, pets can be given calming medication under the guidance of a veterinarian. However, administering any medication without professional medical advice can be harmful. Therefore, please pay special attention to the safety and well-being of your pets during Diwali.
