Nowadays, we spend the majority of our time in front of mobile, laptop, or tablet screens. Consequently, eye fatigue and irritation have become commonplace. To combat this issue, the trend of wearing 'blue light' blocking glasses has surged significantly in recent times.

However, do these glasses truly serve as a protective shield for our eyes, or are they merely part of a passing trend? Let's find out from Dr. Purendra Bhasin, Founder, Director, and Surgeon at Ratan Jyoti Netralaya in Gwalior.
**What is Blue Light, and Why Does It Cause Eye Discomfort?**
Blue light is a form of high-energy light. It is emitted not only by digital screens but also by natural sunlight. When we stare at screens continuously for hours on end, we begin to experience issues such as dry eyes, irritation, fatigue, and headaches. This entire cluster of symptoms is collectively known as "Digital Eye Strain." Most people assume that the blue light emitted by screens is the primary culprit behind all these ailments.
**Company Claims vs. Scientific Reality**
Regarding the blue light glasses available on the market, manufacturers claim that their specialized lenses block blue light from reaching the eyes. Companies assert that this reduces strain on the eyes and improves sleep quality, as blue light is known to interfere with our sleep hormones. However, scientific evidence and research do not fully corroborate these claims. Several studies indicate the following:
Blue light glasses are not particularly effective in alleviating eye fatigue.
The actual causes of eye pain and dryness are not blue light itself, but rather staring at screens continuously without breaks, maintaining poor posture while seated, and blinking less frequently while viewing screens.
Therefore, simply wearing a pair of glasses cannot resolve this problem at its root.
**Do These Glasses Offer Any Benefits at All?**
Some individuals do indeed experience a certain degree of relief when wearing these glasses. Especially for those who work on mobile phones or laptops late into the night, these glasses may offer some minor relief or lead to a slight improvement in sleep patterns; however, it would be incorrect to regard them as the sole solution for comprehensive eye protection.
**Genuine Measures for Eye Protection**
According to Dr. Purendra Bhasin, for proper eye care, it is far more effective to modify one's habits rather than relying solely on eyewear:
**Adopt the 20-20-20 Rule:** This is the most excellent method for resting your eyes. After every 20 minutes of work, look away from the screen and focus on an object situated 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
**Blink Frequently:** We often forget to blink while staring at a screen. Regular blinking helps maintain moisture in the eyes and prevents dryness.

**Optimize Screen Settings:** Keep your screen brightness balanced and maintain an appropriate distance between your eyes and the screen.
**Get Adequate Sleep:** To alleviate eye fatigue, it is crucial to ensure your body receives sufficient, high-quality sleep.
While blue-light-blocking glasses may indeed offer you some relief, cultivating healthy habits and taking regular breaks during work remain the most infallible strategies for maintaining healthy eyes.
