Mumbai-Style Bhel Puri Recipe: When you crave something tangy and spicy in the evening, Bhel Puri is often the first thing that comes to mind. Famous for its sweet, sour, and spicy flavor profile, Mumbai-style Bhel Puri is no longer confined to Mumbai; it is now enjoyed with great enthusiasm in many cities across the country. While the Bhel Puri sold in markets is delicious, you can easily prepare it at home as well.

Raju Kashyap, a Bhel Puri vendor in Moradabad, explains that it can be easily made at home using a few basic pantry staples, along with *namkeen sev* (crispy savory noodles) and tamarind chutney. Let’s look at an easy way to prepare this zesty Bhel Puri.
Ingredients for Bhel Puri
To make Bhel Puri at home, you will need puffed rice (*murmura*), a finely chopped onion, a chopped tomato, boiled potatoes, green chilies, fresh coriander leaves, *namkeen sev*, *chaat masala*, salt, lemon, and sweet tamarind chutney. You can adjust the quantities of each ingredient according to your personal taste and requirements.
How to Prepare Zesty Bhel Puri
Start by placing the puffed rice in a large mixing bowl. Add the finely chopped onion, tomato, boiled potatoes, and green chilies, and mix well. Next, add salt and *chaat masala* to taste. Squeeze some lemon juice over the mixture. Add the sweet tamarind chutney and stir everything thoroughly. Finally, top it off with *namkeen sev* and finely chopped fresh coriander leaves. Your zesty Bhel Puri is ready! Serve it immediately to ensure the puffed rice stays crisp.
A Tip to Keep Bhel Puri Crispy
The true essence of Bhel Puri lies in the crunchiness of the puffed rice and the tanginess of the spicy-sweet chutney. Therefore, do not let it sit for too long after preparation. Once the chutney is added, the puffed rice (murmura) begins to soften. If you prefer your bhel puri to be extra crunchy, add the chutney and sev just before serving.

Making bhel puri at home is cheaper than buying it from the market.
According to Raju Kashyap, a plate of bhel puri in the market typically costs between ₹20 and ₹50. In contrast, you can prepare it at home using ingredients already available in your kitchen. This allows you to enjoy a delicious, tangy bhel puri at home with your family at a much lower cost.
